The beginning of the greatest bromance in sci-fi history:

I'm feeling generous and giving this one a 7. Probably the weakest episode of the season so far. In summary, I was expecting a creepier episode but got one that was talky and used a rehashed plot with a predictable resolution. Nice character moments.

Quick take on the pros and cons.

Pros
  • Nice to learn more about Uhura's background.
  • Nice to learn more about Kirk.
  • Interesting type of mission and setting for the crew.
Cons
  • Quite talky rather than the creepiness I was expecting from the trailer.
  • Nebula aliens-rehashed plot, predictable resolution.
  • While we learned more about Kirk and Uhura, it felt superficial.
  • Conflict between Pelia and Una was tedious.
  • Ditto for Jim and Sam.
  • Wesley just isn't JTK. Wishing he was playing a different character. Pine is better.
While the Uhura/Kirk moments were nice, seems like Kirk working with Spock would've been more interesting. Perhaps in an upcoming episode. Thanks to the preview before the season, we know he'll appear at least once more. I would prefer less Kirk (regardless of who is playing him), not more.

Handling the Fleet Captain "issue" was handled quickly and effectively!

They also said they needed to "refine" it (into what, it's the most common element in the universe!) and Uhurah was getting a toxic reaction to it.
Presumably separating the deuterium from the regular hydrogen. It's an isotope of hydrogen. Regular hydrogen is far more common than the deuterium isotope.

And what if they tell you to destroy ALL your equipment and never harvest fuel again?

Stay stuck on your planet.

What will you do?

Where do you draw the line?

I'm willing to find a reasonable solution here, but blowing up the facility wasn't necessary when you could've stopped it, released the beings, moved the facility and be operational in a few weeks / months.
This is dwelling on trivia to no good end.

Did anyone else figure out after the first few times Uhura heard the droning sound that it was clearly some alien species trying to communicate with her?
Yeah, it was really obvious from the start what was happening. Nebula aliens . . . again. Trying to find a way to communicate. Solution was obvious too.

Is it wrong I don't even remember the exact details "Night Terrors"?
You want details?
One of Marina Sirtis' worst acting performances for Star Trek the Next Generation.

Lots of lobbing of the idiot ball from one character to another until they finally figure out what the aliens are trying to tell them in the last 2 minutes; and some ridiculous technobabble about how they can only maintain a stream of hydrogen for about 2 minutes once they know hydrogen is what the aliens need.

And they're most intelligent character, Data is completely ineffectual even though he's 100% unaffected by the situation occurring with the rest of the crew.

But of course they all survive and just go to sleep at the end of the episode ;)

I don’t know why, but I loved this one.

Let’s be honest, it was a pretty run-of-the-mill Star Trek episode, but it’s the character chemistry, interactions and performances that carry it. This was Uhura’s best episode, maybe even better than “Children of the Comet.” And, I know this may be somewhat controversial, but I really love Paul Wesley as Kirk. I honestly think he captures Kirk’s somewhat reserved charm and playfulness from the first half of S1 TOS very well. He also has really good chemistry with Uhura and La’an, at lest in my opinion.

Good episode. It hit all the right Star Trek notes for me. 8.5/10

Plot was a bit of a Star Trek trope, but SNW is more about the characters than the technobabble. I'm not sold on Paul Wesley yet but I'm cautiously optimistic.
I do think Pelia is way underused and it makes me sad. She's got so much potential and such a cool actress.
Love that Bruce Horak came back as Hemmer, the way he teased Uhura was so adorable and I miss him.
I gave it an 8-9, just because the actors chemistry was fantastic, especially the ribbing between the Kirk bro's.

Solid 7/10

Nice twists and turns, plus I'm a sucker for horror and suspense. I thought there was some good character moments for almost everyone. (Ortegas left to nothing but a brief nod.) Una's conflict with her former instructor who is now chief engineer was interesting as was the continued friendship of Spock and Chapel. Well, at least the brief moments we got with what is suppose to be the main cast was done well.

I would have rated this episode higher except for this show's contact need to stick a bad version of Kirk in it. I'm still not buying Wesley in the role and after three episodes I think it's enough. He just isn't Kirk and his part in the story should have been given to characters who don't already have 79 episodes and seven feature films. Is there a reason why Ortegas, Chapel, Laan or the Doctor couldn't have been helping Uhura investigate the strange anamoly? How is the audience suppose to get invested in these characters when screen time is being given to a character that we already know so much about? This show is suppose to be about Pike and his crew. Not a Kirk prequal.

I gave it a 9/10. I liked that Uhura was the focus episode. I was intrigued by what she was experiencing. It was nice to see Kirk meet her for the first time and help her. I'm really liking Paul Wesley's Kirk.
