Hit it!

Obviously, you haven't been a Trek enthusiast since TOS hit the airwaves and that was pretty much standard procedure for over a decade and beyond.
Yeah but as I get older I find that I don't really want to put more work in patching the holes left by the writers. It's their job. I just try to enjoy the show. It still bothers me when they mess it up, but I won't try to cover for them unless I have an easy fix in mind.

Maybe I missed it, but wouldn't any medical scan, blood sample, DNA scanning mcguffin machine have outed Number One as being Illyrian?

Yeah I pointed that out earlier. It works better if "Illyrian" is a subset of human, but then you'd think they'd still spot it, and with Bashir in DS9 the same question has to be raised. Best to not think about it, I guess.

Heh ... "Yes, Yes.., your Corporate Hatred will only make you stronger ... "

I'm not sure I follow your meaning here.

I dunno, I think it makes sense that a scan might not be able to detect genetic alterations unless it's explicitly looking for them. If it's just looking for basic Human genes I could imagine a modified Human passing, especially since this is the 23rd Century and presumably the scanners are less advanced. I mean, hell, Bashir passed every scan anyone took of him until 2373.

Well it's the same problem with Bashir.

I mean, we can identify things from their genome today in relatively short order. I think in the 23rd century it would be trivial and part of regular, annual medical checks. Furthermore, given the Federation's stance on genetic alteration you'd think those medical scans, especially for Starfleet officers, would be rather thorough.

I just watched it again and I think she explained it.

Una explains that her species “adapts” their biology to new environments/planets, instead of terraforming a planet to adapt it to them. So I think the way it works is that she was on a planet with an earth-like atmosphere, and her species adapted to human form to be able to live in that planets environment. This would explain why no tricorders/medical equipment read her as alien, they read her as human, because that is what her biology adapted too.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think that’s it.

That's not a half-bad explanation, again assuming it's a different species to begin with. However her prodigious immune system certainly would raise eyebrows at some point, I'd think.

I'm trying to ride with all this for the sake of gold old fashioned episodic Trek but at this point, I wish they just went with all new characters. Pike is fun single dad taking the kids on a jaunt. Number One has an awful name is isn't from Earth (yet she's got the Asian-Irish surname). Transporter chief Kyle isn't British. Uhura is there. Chapel is there. M'Benga is there and none of them remind me of their original versions. When they said "Pike series!" I was hoping for some Boyce and Tyler. And Spock hasn't shouted on the bridge once yet.

And, naturally, we gotta push the Khan button. Because Star Trek only had one villain apparently.

I enjoyed the novelty and energy of the first two episodes, but this is starting to lose me.

A 6. And I'm being generous because it bored me for the majority of it.

I just watched it today. I couldn't watch it earlier. So.... I mean, it's okay. I'm one of the people who thinks that both Discovery and Picard are absolute dumpster fires, so it's not like this show had a high bar to clear. Even so, it has managed to be enjoyable for these three episodes so far. I've noticed some irksome problems but nothing that I'm going to go out of my way to complain about.

Una lifting Hemmer all slow-motion, and then when she was walking with an obvious dummy slung over her shoulder, was cringe. Absolute cringe. But that was the only time that I could complain about Una. Otherwise she was pretty cool in her capacity as Number One. She assumed command with efficiency and authority. I like that.

I haven't decided yet about La'an. Right now she seems like a cross between Tasha Yar and Worf, but I'm interested in finding out more about her. I do appreciate that she appears to be friends with Number One, and the more I see of the actress, the more attractive she is. I like how they've done her hair. It's cute and badass at the same time...if that can be a thing?

Doctor M'Benga is cool, but hasn't done anything to really stand out yet.

Were diagnostics different in the TOS era? I honestly don't remember, but I know that diagnostics in the TNG era were...level 5 was a short one and the long style was a level 1. So it threw me when Hemmer said a level 5 diagnostic would take all night. My brain said "Wait, doesn't he mean level 1?"

I'm not sold on Spock yet. I didn't see him on discovery so I don't know much about the actor's previous performance, but so far this one hasn't sold me yet. I do like Pike, but I'm waiting for some cool moments for him to shine.

Plot wise, it was okay. It kind of felt like TOS, and it continued the tradition of shipwide virus episodes. I guess I would say the one thing that bugs me is that it feels like these writers still aren't used to sci-fi yet. Maybe that will change in future episodes. But it feels like they haven't dialed it in yet. Otherwise, I think this is a comfortable 7 out of 10.

The secret to Una's "seemingly" super strength: The ability to turn Hemmer into a fluffy plush doll...
