Beverly also was at a colony when it met a tragic end.

As for Deanna, isn't having Lwaxana for a mother pretty tragic?

Hemmer's backstory is just him being awesome at everything he tries. We will then get a montage of him surfing, mountain climbing, riding a horse and skydiving. He also gets all the ladies and guys.

Although he is an Aenar, and until 100 years before SNW his people were still largely misunderstood and subject to misguided theories and even abuse in the case of the one Aenar kidnapped and used by the Romulans to control their drone ship. So he himself might not be the product of tragedy but the Aenar have a pretty controversial history and recent at that.

Plus the Aenar can see, just not in the traditional sense.

Jhamel knew Shran's skin was blue.

JHAMEL: I've never met a blueskin.
SHRAN: You're blind. How can you tell my skin is blue?
JHAMEL: Don't ask me to explain. I was never very good at science.

Hemmer single handedly saved the species with his prowess with the ladies. They had to send him away before he made the Anaer the dominant species on the planet

A (TV) writer is compensated for his work. He willingly signs a contract turning over the rights to his story and elements to the studio (and gets residuals). If he/she doesn't like that, go create your own show. It would be ridiculous if who ever originally gave a line to "Lt Riley" now has to be paid/credited EVERY time Lt Riley is seen in TOS. That's what they were paid for.

I do wish they'd make the transporter operator a little less excitable. Not every transport has to be him frantically doing technobabble and shouting into an intercom.

Aenar: That was the best sex I've ever had.
Hemmer: Well, I am a genius.

This argument relies upon the a priori assumption that all contracts are valid because all the parties are equal. In reality, of course, workers have much less bargaining power than the owners of the means of production, and must frequently agree to terms of employment that are exploitative in order to survive. That principle applies across many different income levels and industries.

But in any event, I was referring to the authors of media tie-in novels, not TV writers -- who have a very powerful union that fights for their rights, unlike media tie-in novelists.

And yet a similar scenario applies with at least some writers and their characters. The Estate of Theodore Sturgeon gets a royalty check every time T'Pau is used -- that's why Berman and Braga created T'Pol instead of using T'Pau.

    Except for the genius line.

And the "best sex" anyone's ever had.

Well, as I included a second source to my original post, one that says the information came from Brannon Braga, that adds a little more legitimacy to it. Certainly more than your assumption that they were trying to avoid confusion with a flash in the pan rock band.

Why would they care about a one hit wonder band from over a decade in the past?
