Actually, this is the one time the show didn't get continuity wrong. The Borg as we know them are exterminated by Jurati's nice Federation-friendly Borg exist.
Not exactly, as we saw in Prodigy the Borg Borg are going to continue popping back up any time someone happens upon and reactivates their old stuff.

What was destroyed completely however was the Queen.

I think this was a marked improvement over the pilot and I didn't hate the pilot. This is probably the first Star Trek with no violence (beyond a scuffle) and pure discussion in a generation. There was no focus on action but merely the point of isolationism and seeming security versus opening up completely and being vulnerable - with the show taking a definite stance approving of the latter. Xenophobia is tackled and shown to be wrong and impractical (*points to the technology decay line*)

Bernd over at EAS made some interesting observations (Yes he can make those too, I mean that is 90% of his website)
At the diplomatic reception in SFA: "Beta Test", the Doctor and his duet partner sing the aria "Pa-pa-pa" from Mozart's The Magic Flute. Nahla Ake and President Sadal of Betazed are just discussing their "dear little kids" as we can hear the words "So liebe Kinderlein" at 0:54.
"liebe Kinderlein" means "little children" in German.

At the diplomatic reception in SFA: "Beta Test", Nahla Ake and President Sadal of Betazed get into an argument while discussing options for his planet to rejoin the Federation. This happens just as the Doctor and his duet partner sing "Jetzt, Schätzchen, jetzt sind wir allein" from Beethoven's only opera Fidelio. The aria includes the line "Wann wirst du das Jawort mir geben?" (When will you marry me?), and it ends without a conclusion just as President Sadal aborts the negotiations and leaves

The Writer or director really themed the operas to the episode.

I think the Burn actually works really well for Starfleet Academy too because the implication is that this is a bunch of adults (I hate calling them children) who have grown up in the post-apocalypse era of the setting. These are people who haven't grown up in the shadow of the Federation's stability and while Caleb is basically just Star Lord (orphaned misfit who grew up in a performative bad boy), everyone else is from cultures that are bouncing off one another as well.

Who knows where the name came from? Groups of Earthlings often come up with distinctive names for themselves or for other peoples.

Pretty sure Mennonites and Moravians and and Protestants and Rastafarians are not aliens. :)

Yes. Which is why I asked. Rhetorical rather than seeking information which is of course unknown at this point (if ever).

And all of your examples are known. Moravia is a region, Mennon and Ras Tafari refer to people, and the Reformation was about protesting the Church.

I emailed Bernd in 2009 and had a brief correspondence about ship design with him. He was as nice and gracious as one could be when dealing with, what I imagine, was an obnoxious 14 year old  Ever since, I've respected the hell out of him, even though I disagree with his interpretations sometimes.

This episode did feel paced oddly at times and it did feel like there was a lot more nostalgia bait moments, but the overall plot could have been any bottle episode on TNG, DS9 or Voyager. More closer to DS9 with Jake involved.

For me, most of the comedy landed, most of the plot was pretty well on point. The stakes were super low, because as Vance said, they could get another chance in 10 years when Sadal was out of office, so the resolution at the end wasn't too bothersome for me as it fit into the bottle episode formula.

I loved the references to Tamira being more powerful and requiring a neural inhibitor. I also liked that they represented a disability in the Betazed in two different ways via the Father and Daughter. My personal theory is that Sadal and Ocam use telepathy in private, but because Tamira isn't able to use her telepathic abilities, they also sign in front of her.

Another possibility is that the family are empaths, but she's a full telepath, so the inhibitor is specifically to restrict her abilities in that regard. We shall see. I think this plays into why they don't have the traditional black eyes as well, something seemed off in the family. This is further supported, imo, by Ocam getting sort of "drunk" off Darem's dudebro energy at the end and acting a fool. Both Ocam and the President show only Empathic abilities, but Tamira connects and reads the Whale's mind like Spock, without needing physical contact. I think Tamira may be the only true Telepath we saw in the episode.

I also got the telepath vibe off of her when she was introduced, the sound quieted and the visuals blurred just a bit. It took on an almost dreamy quality, and I pegged her as a Betazed because it felt disorienting, and they focused very intently on her face. It felt like she was trying to read the viewer, so to speak. She was meant to stand apart from the others in more than just her appearance or relationship to Caleb.

I also did not enjoy that the focus was taken away from the other cadets, I need my SAM time dammit! I have heard that there are more character focused episodes down the line, so I'm looking forward to that.

Nahla Ake is still the best part of the show to me lol

Because advertising is a lie.

Yep. I literally never thought that I would even enjoy this show, but considering I gave the last episode a 8.5, I'd rate this one around the same, though rounding up to 9 this time as it slightly edged over 8.5. It's good Trek, and so far, it doesn't make the same mistakes that SNW did in certain places. I'm definitely impressed so far.

Ooh, that's fascinating! It would explain why he suddenly had a personality at the end after being an extra then having one line. He's probably not that used to non-psis and is absorbing more from those with minds with less natural defense.

The best part is, he probably still doesn't have a personality lol He's like a kid who's in that hyper-impressionable stage, who just wants to impress everyone, so in his desire to act more "Human" and fit in, he's just absorbing the personalities of those around him inadvertently. It also could have just been that he was overwhelmed by being in the conference room, because like you said he's not used to non-psi individuals, so he was very very subdued.

For the character's sake, I hope it's empathy playing mind games and not his actual personality

Unfortunately felt this was a step down after the comparatively strong first episode. A lot of the hallmarks of this era of Star Trek returned full-force - dialogue relying heavily on pithy phrases about togetherness/identity/etc that form the bulk of conversation rather than being deployed appropriately, all characters getting flattened into the same narrative voice and sounding identical at times, and a meandering plot that just spins wheels.

It reminded me of "The Dauphin", and when you watch the two episodes side by side the contrast is pretty stark in how the ability (or perhaps desire) of writers to tell a three-act story has vanished over the last couple decades. Even if you think Dauphin is crap, it moves at a quick pace and the tension and revelations rise steadily, whereas this felt like Caleb and the Betazoid character just sort of aimlessly milling around, with the breakdown of negotiations, tension between the two characters, and subsequent resolution happening very abruptly at the end.

As always though, some positives: Lura is still a fun character (albeit a little bit tonally blunt at the minute), the EMH's opera stuff was fun, and a lot of the jokes still land. I've forgotten most of Discovery but it was good to see Reno again. Some of Caleb's dialogue in this one was a bit cringeworthy, but the actor is superb at breezing through it and presenting it with charisma. Still very interested to see what's next, but not quite as enthusiastic as I was after the premiere. 5/10

I could be misremembering, but I believe Season 2 of Prodigy takes place earlier in the timeline than Season 3 of Picard
