Star Trek Rotten Tomatoes Rating

I can't believe how well this movie is being received by the critics. Usually I think sci-fi is reviewed unfairly, especially by the mainstream reviewers. This is turning out to be the most critically acclaimed trek movie it would seem.

** 1/2 out of **** is considered a negative review, right? Ebert's ** 1/2 movies were always thumbs downs.

That's what Christy Lemire of the AP (meaning a lot of newspapers that don't have their own critic will probably run it) gave the movie. And that's mostly because she doesn't like the Old Spock stuff.

Actually reading her review, though, shows it to be overwhelmingly positive. She does like the movie, she just isn't as enthralled by it as some.

Ebert reviews on a sliding scale - he's willing to acknowledge a run-and-shoot as an "excellent" movie within the scope of run-and-shoots without considering it "excellent" alongside his very favorite films of all time. Whether Lemire does the same thing or simply reserves four stars for films she considers excellent on an absolute scale of some kind is something I couldn't say without having read a whole lot of her reviews.

One article mentioned a sour grapes Trek fan over at some site called Trekspace.org, which I had never heard of before. So I went there and saw someone's post with the following highlights:

I can't help but feel a little sick at the gushing from supposedly foundational Star Trek fans about this flick. ... There was no stopping the crack addicts who were so giddy about this new sweet flavored improved Star Crack. ... Just remember this, New Coke fans. This new Trek is based on something original. Something better than it could ever hope to be. It was dreamt up by one man, not by a committee. I only hope that someday, someone comes along and wrenches it from you like they did from me. I hope you get that thrill of losing something you love. ... Paramount only owns the rights. We owned the legacy. Now it has been taken from us and we are banned from returning to that tall ship.
And I'm just thankful I'm not him. What a sad, pathetic way to go through life.

:lol: And sad and pathetic at the same time...

For comparison, when Wolverine was only at 28 or so reviews, how many were negative?

It's hard to say if negative reviews are just being held back until release.

He also gets a great deal of things wrong and has a ridiculous sense of entitlement. "By one man, not a committee"? Who is this guy, Richard Arnold?

JJ obviously came to this guys house, took all of his DVD's, models, toys, posters and books, put them in to one big pile and shat upon them.

WTF, man? :cardie::guffaw:

Why would they hold back negative reviews until release ?
That defeats the whole purpose of the site.

According to a post by Dennis on page 7 of this thread, Wolverine was down to 53% positive when it had only 17 reviews.

Drama queens are so entertaining!

"And one day, the Trek Rapture will come, and The Great Bird will sweep in with his mighty starship and take all of The True Faithful away with him where we will watch "The Alternative Factor" until the end of days!"

Yeah, this is better than Wolverine! :)

Looking at the snippits of "fresh" reviews of Wolverine, it makes you wonder how brutal the "rotten" reviews must be :guffaw:

Examples of Fresh Wolverine:

"This movie follows the pattern of most summer blockbusters there's a strong first act that sucks you in, a 2nd act where things get a little shaky and a last act that's awful."

"Wastes a lot of time weaving an unnecessarily-complicated premise given that it leads to a fairly simplistic showdown of good versus evil."

"The latest edition of the X-Men franchise is easily the least, with a convoluted storyline, poorly defined characters and a dark one-note tone that lacks the humor and light touches of the earlier three installments."

Christy Lemire certainly isn't a fan. she doesn't seemed to have watched TOS at all. not that there's anything wrong with that but anybody who's watched Where No Man Has Gone Before with even half a mind would know that the fact that Kirk and Spock weren't always chummy is NOT revisionist history.
