What's not to love?
My head is buzzing with theories about Jack, trying to lay it all out for myself so I can explain it on The Artificial Tango. Good grief this is one of the most coherent 5 episodes I've seen in Trek since DS9's last season!

The soundscape for this episode is nothing short of perfect. Starting the chapter with that computer pinging audio takes me instantly to my Happy Place.

In response to a Janeway/Chakotay shipper, Matalas said on Twitter that Janeway wasn’t on the show because she “belonged to Prodigy”
although I suppose he could have been lying.
Speaking of shipping - not sure if it has been brought up when people speak about 7 and her relationships but we don't know if she was still involved with Chakotay when he was lost with the Protostar

Yes, it would make perfect sense to take the form of a recently unmasked Changeling. Nothing safer than hiding in plain sight.

I don't care if the new changelings are new with different abilities. That's fine. Change 'em up (no pun intended), give them new strengths and new weaknesses. Go nuts. Have fun with it.
What I object to is having no clue how the original changelings actually worked back in the day. That's just inexcusable, wrong and suuuper dumb.
I'd not even considered phasers when I saw that scene. All I could think was: "Ha, Phoenix, First Contact".
In otherwords, just a tactic to explicitly tell the audience that none of those torpedoes will hit.
I thought of Star Trek V! Same gag, many Treks.
Whole thing felt like a TUC homage to me, with the enemy ship rearing up to fire and our heroes having to make a quick decision to get out of it.
I don't think I believe him. That sounds too draconian. I think he wants to surprise us. But just a guess. I think he likes to put on a Poker Face. "Who? Me?"
It makes more sense to me that they could have her in PIC but they just can't do anything major with her, like kill her off or say she's not part of Starfleet anymore, things like that. But maybe that makes too much sense... I hate the whole "rules is rules!" mentality. But that's why I'm drawn to the TOS Movies and PIC Season 3 so much.
Seriously can you actually pay better attention before you rant on the writers?
First you rant is utterly without merit.
1. You start by attacking the writing not just of Picard but the writers of "nuTrek". Now that might make some rational sense if it was a reasonable rant (it's not which will be addressed later), and that it didn't also apply to Star Trek, Star Trek the Animated Series, the TOS Film series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, TNG Film series, and of course Star Trek: Enterprise.
Every single official tv or film group that has been made from 66 to current has used general spacial phrasing as dialogue on their shows. Every single one. So making a judgment call to the writers of Picard, and NuTrek as a whole, while ignoring the fact that this has always occurred with every writing group in Trek strongly implies you aren't impartial to NuTrek, thus your opinion is full of bias. Because of that no rational being could reasonably consider your opinion simply off the facts presented.
Of course the facts betray your view.
Then to the heart of this specific example.
You took one portion of the log entry and ignored the rest.
The key dialogue is "edge of the alpha Quadrant", and in the same log, "perhaps our return to Federation space" is the 2nd more key data point. Now since we have never been gifted with a fully realized three dimensional map, we are left with primarily using 2 dimensional ones, like for example the one you provided. But the show has also gifted us with a map of the general location of the Rynar system (the location Beverley had them come to and exceedingly close to the Nebula they just escaped from).
So we actually know that it's not just some location on the large boarder of the alpha/beta quadrant that runs through a huge portion of the Federation.
Its (again using 2 dimensions) the top portion of Federation space, with the ship close to the border of the alpha/ beta quadrant.
Using the map you provided it would be closest to text of Teneb.
So no, the dialogue presented in the log entry wasn't a useless statement. What was useless was your rant, because it is shown to be without merit. And simply paying attention would have shown this to be true,
Oh yeah, he could totally be putting that person on. Misdirection is part of the game.
Plus he does seem to get frustrated with a lot of the same questions and nitpicking that gets directed his way so he could have said that to get people to stop pestering him.

The way Jack somehow knew the crewmembers were changelings and was able to suddenly go john wick and kill them all, makes me wonder if Jack is some sort of anti-changeling weapon. It might explain why the changelings are trying to get him since they know he is a threat that is capable of stopping them.
