Mariner is definitely the Jake of the show. Gifted but massively irresponsible. By the end B-99 Jake has managed to completely turn things around, growing up whilst still retaining his essence.

I do suspect that by the end of LDS, Mariner will go through a similar growth process.
Possibly, but I doubt it will be as extreme with Mariner as it was with Jake, i.e. becoming a parent, etc.

Well, she doesn't have the broken family that Jake does, so becoming a good parent wouldn't be a satisfactory resolution for her.

I think she'll be a brilliant officer by the time it's all done, but brilliant in a not-exactly-by-the-book (but still within the boundaries of said book) way.

I think that's the biggest appeal to me, and Mariner is like Tom Paris in a way. Breaking the rules but honestly wants to do the right thing just not according to procedure. And while I don't think she has a broken family, she definitely doesn't have a healthy family relationship with her parents.

This is why the Mary Sue thing falls flat for me. Mariner has a huge amount of room for growth and learning from her mistakes, rather than repeatedly being a jackass for the sake of comedy.

You're welcome to think whatever you want.

The etymology of the term has nothing to do with anything. Mariner could be a guy and the way the character is written, they'd still deserve the moniker. A Mary Sue can do no wrong; their ends justify their means; and all other characters serve to reinforce that notion.

You're correct about one thing; this isn't for this thread.
But it is stated time and again that she's in the wrong consistently. Sometimes her schemes work out and sometimes they don't. Her friends love her but by no means think she's right when she tries to steal the ship. Ransom is in charge of her now so who knows. Also, every superhero is a goddamned Mary Sue.

I would think that Boimler would have standards in the women he's interested in.

Boimler is hyper competent and intelligent. He'd want somebody on a similar level.

Not somebody who is "Hired Help" who picks grapes in his vineyard.
Or maybe he just really hates being in charge of raisin grapes. I know this is a cartoon, but I would rather we not make assumptions about people who do physical labor. It's classist and untrue. There have been great poets who were migrant farm workers. The work one does is not indicative of intelligence, only of circumstance, (or rather, often a matter of circumstance beyond our control.)

Is Beckett Mariner the one officer who has spent the longest time as an Ensign in StarFleet?

It's estimated that she's 35 y/o over here.

Given Tawny Newsome is 39 y/o, I can see plausibility in Beckett Mariner being 35 y/o, especially given how many ships she's served on already, yet hasn't really ranked up.
