That's almost more work than just typing "Nope" four times. You have to actually move your hand from the keyboard over to the mouse and move it around.

I had a sniping contest go about 150 posts once; it was loads of fun (both doing it and rereading it afterward). But very well, because you have that awesome LD Riker avatar...

I just rewatched it, and I'm not totally convinced that Mariner isn't actually a secret agent. Lethal in combat, unlimited source of contraband weapons, and clever enough to win a game despite supposedly never playing it... yeah. She's Mary Sue meets Chuck Norris. And if she's not in Section 31 already, they either don't know about her yet or they're scared she'll take over.

Why? Earth and Tellar are both members of the Federation. I'm sure there are Tellerites from Earth, Tellerites from Mars, humans from Tellar, humans and Tellerites and Vulcans and Bolians and others from other Federation home worlds or random colony worlds or born and raised largely among ships/space stations.
One of things in this show's favor, the dismantling of the planets of hats.

Very true. "Lower Decks" is actually more of a parody fanfiction than a serious Trek story. Otherwise, Boimler would be a section 8 and Mariner would be in the brig. And her mom would probably have been relieved of command.

Having written quite a few similar parody fics, I know the signs.

It's not fan fiction by (most) reasonable definitions. It's professionally created Star Trek under the purview of CBS, and advertised accordingly. I have conflicting ideas on whether it qualifies as parody. Parodical, certainly, but probably not straight up parody, since it isn't really using pastiches (outside of Ransom, maybe), and is going out of its way to have internal consistency with the Star Trek universe as previously presented.

Boimler couldn't receive a Section 8, for a number of reasons. First of all, Section 8 discharges were removed before the 2000s when the US Army updated its separation procedures (and also, Boimler isn't US Army). But also, Boimler has been consistently shown to be incredibly qualified and capable throughout Season 2, and these qualities were certainly known beforehand. If Barclay wasn't "Section 8", then Boimler isn't.

I think four-star Admiral Freeman is the answer to the Mariner and Captain Freeman conundrums. It's very likely that Mariner suffers from some serious PTSD, and her time on the Cerritos is a form of decompression imposed by her parents.
