Wikipedia, quoting a book by Harlan Ellison, says that's a common misconception, and that Roddenberry wrote the novelization on his own (basing it on ADF's story for the screenplay). Roddenberry's a professional writer, and the book different enough from ADF's novelizations of the period, that I believe Roddenberry had at least major involvement in the final draft.
Thanks! Obviously I was remembering the rumors from the 80s.

This is kind of off topic here, but I was hoping that if they ever did a Live Action Archer, they would cast some handsome dude like John Hamm, but still dub in H Jon Benjamin's voice; because the voice is 50% of the character.

Just put Jon Benjamin in a hairpiece. Almost every other character looks like a good deal their voice actor (except Pam) that most of them could have played their counterparts in a live-action Archer, including the late, great Jessica Walter.

Yeah, I was surprised to learn that Chris Parnell wasn't the model for Cyril.

I think all of the characters, even Ransom and Shaxs, were drawn with the actors in mind. That's actually fairly common in animation these days, especially when involving popular actors (O'Connell, Newsome, Quaid, arguably Cordero and Wells).

But LD also gives us pretty basic character design, so that Ransom could be played by any white man with brown hair and a square jaw.

I actually thought I had heard before that it WAS the case, and that all of the resemblances were done with a possible live-action appearance in mind.

Very true. "Lower Decks" is actually more of a parody fanfiction than a serious Trek story. Otherwise, Boimler would be a section 8 and Mariner would be in the brig. And her mom would probably have been relieved of command.

Having written quite a few similar parody fics, I know the signs.
