For myself, this is the first episode of Discovery where I felt a connection to the characters. I liked seeing the relationship between Vina and Pike and how it added to what was seen in TOS. I, also, liked that the confrontation which broke up the relationship between Spock and Burnham was not some form of weird sexual perversion, as was theorized months ago. It felt believable.

I feel this episode did what a good prequel should do; adding details, context, and meaning to what came before. I came away from the episode feeling excited about this show.

Also, raise your hand if you're going to go watch the Cage and Menagerie tonight.

I did too, and that's the best compliment I can give it. I still don't like Giorgeau (And her gloating about Genocide still has me wondering why she's getting her own show) but this episode clicked in a way that not many episodes have from Discovery. A poster up thread said scenes were allowed to breathe. That's so true. These characters became relatable, finally.

Vina, singing plants, Talosians, and a recap of The Cage! This episode was made of awesome. I give it my first ever 10.

That being said, the lens flare really got to me tonight. I've never had a problem with them before, but there were just awful this time. There was a point where I could barely see Pike and Vina. It's not impacting my score because the episode was so good, but they really need to dial it back down.
