I wonder if the Kelpians are actually meant to shed the ganglia like baby teeth in humans. But they’ve been conditioned to believe they are dying just so they can offer themselves up for sacrifice. Saru no longer felt fear, maybe the Ba’ul pick that point so they face no resistance. Without that it would just be a natural part of their life cycle.
You know, I was thinking the same thing. When he said he was feeling stronger and no longer felt fear, I thought along these lines as well!

With regards to the brain-drilling singalong, it's a judgment call. That's supposed to be a very intense, emotional moment so you don't want to risk getting laughs by having them break out into some sort of attempt at "futuristic" 23rd century pop music, which could potentially come off as goofy. On the hand, going with an actual song from our era risks seeming anachronistic. Six of one, half dozen of another.

And pedantic fanboys who don't have the class to admit that they were mistaken in their assumption, when provided with an answer to their direct question, are, and always have been, tiresome.

We get it. You didn't like the 20th-century music reference. That fact has been established. It is, also, based entirely on your own tastes, and not something you're going to be declared "right" about. Move on, maybe?

Stop this please. If you don't want to continue a conversation on a topic, just ignore it - posters are entitled to disagree with you, and continue to do so.

Indeed. The TOS characters were quoting Shakespeare, TNG did the same (as well as have the works of Arthur Conan Doyle and 1940's Film Noir and pulp detective stories represented!)
Just to add...
There's no way in Hell anybody can convince me that songs like this will ever be forgotten...

LOVE is never going to go away and neither will humankind's expression of it in song.

That's a very charitable 'potentially' there ;)

This was my take as well, that the culling was deliberately timed to stop them from reaching 'maturity'. Although I'll admit I find it a little unclear, I think that's the 'lie' that Saru referred to at the end.

Trek tech should always be somewhat familiar to the audience and advanced from what we knew.

In the 60s television was a fairly recent thing in the lives of the audience, so was the telephone being so common that everyone had one. Giving the Enterprise crew a massive tv that was their window to space (like how tv was a window to the world) and they even had video communication. Instead of phones everyone had handheld ones that could go anywhere.

TNG had the holodeck while viewers had recently gotten video games in their lives. The holodeck is a game made real. Now VR is coming very close and we’ve managed to make simple holograms.

Discovery was made in a time where the future seen in Trek has somewhat come true and an accepted part of life. In part because Trek inspired so many to make that happen. We have communicators in our pockets that allow video calls, they’re connected to the largest source of information in human history. They’re a miracle and we got so used to them so fast that we toss them around and complain about them.

Discovery had to at least push the tech. The hologram communication is an attempt to do that. Seems impossible now, but it will probably be common in a few decades.

While it was clearly meant to the viewers to represent "our" Prince, for all we know another artist went by that name in the 23rd century.
So...the Artist of the Artist of the Artist of the Artist of the Artist of the Artist of the Artist of the Artist of the Artist of the Artist formerly known as 'Prince' then. ;)

Bowie will always be there for the weird kids, even in the future. There’s probably a lot of weird kids in Starfleet. Tilly is one of us and Bowie is immortal, he just became music.

DS9 already did holograms though. If they wanted it to seem futuristic they should have gone with communication via brain/eye/ear implants and augmented reality.

Thought it was just terrific. And the price to pay the ferryman (the obol) - is it the severed ganglia? The bit of Tilly's skull removed via (eek) drill? Or the removal of Tilly herself?

Totally loved the translator malfunction, and I read back a few pages -- oh, if #1 could be the Disco captain next season, that would be excellent.

That’s a bit harder to show on screen, more so when multiple people are involved. It’s less able realism and more about how it looks on screen.

It is pretty far fetched that 20/21st century music would still be that popular, but not completely far fetched that it would at least be known and enjoyed by some. We've only just entered the digital age of music and between now and 300 years from now it won't be hard to find and listen to all the music ever made during that period. It's still a bit goofy though. But also, what if its only Stamets and Tilly that like these old-oldies...that would be pretty cute in itself.'

are you saying they won't even dump the bay city rollers?

Disco music is oddly popular with 20 year olds now. Some people do like to deep dive into music they didn’t grow up with, that would continue to happen in the future. It’s probably not everyone but Starfleet seems to consist of a lot of geeks and weird kids, they’re going to get into some obscure stuff. A few are going to discover Bowie and I find that to be wonderful.
