You do not have to be on "good terms" with a family member to list them as your "emergency contact", so Spock supposedly being unhappy to see Michael by no means precludes him having deliberately left clues as to his whereabouts that she would recognize and be able to decipher "in case of emergency" .

He could have rolled the dice and, knowing that the Discovery was out there somewhere, left the message for her on the off chance the Enterprise ran into Michael's ship. That's not very Vulcan and a huge gamble, but then Spock is half-human and frequently took huge gambles during his life.

That isn't what this is about. This is about the idea that Spock specifically left a message for Michael Burnham.
did i say that? for the record: i don't think he did - tearing out stuff from vulcan computers is new (to us). so that first contact scene (spock / burnam) served (most likely among other things) to show how it's done.

spock rolls dices?

It could be the 23rd century Vulcan equivalent of a message in a bottle. Hopefully one person in particular will find it but if left long enough somebody else will and they'll find a way to interpret the message inside.

The whole Vulcan-Romulan Reunification movement was a risk and a gamble predicated not just on logic but hoping for the best.

Forgot to post about the episode. It was very good. It felt like a solid hour of Star Trek, with a good adventure, an intriguing mystery, some good callbacks (hearing the old TOS door opening sound was great), and enjoyable characters. I actually liked the second half of DSC Season 1 (once it got to the mirror universe), and this was probably better then those episodes.

If the whole season keeps to this quality, it will be pretty great storywise. I've pretty much accepted that design wise the show is never going to be very good (outside of the Federation ships, which are generally great looking even if they in no way fit the time period or Prime Timeline in general), but as long as the story/characters/writing stays good this could be a very good (if flawed from a visuals standpoint) season of Star Trek in general. It feels good to be excited to see a new episode of ST again, hopefully it will keep this up.

Pike was BEYOND cool. Not quite at Robauian levels, but close. I love how he asks for a roll call on the bridge, and his wisecracks. It really sucks, knowing what will eventually happen to him. :(

And I bet Reno would get along well with Scotty...

Side note: Anyone else reminded of this guy whenever Connolly was around? They're not the same actor, are they?

I was thinking (hoping) that the fortune cookie message was a hint at Lorca coming back.

I could see Reno and Scotty bitching at each other over how to do various engineering problems over a few bottles for hours.

I could see the same with McCoy for that matter.
