I think Lorca is trying to atone for the loss of his past ship, not as bad a person as he initially was portrayed.

I understand that. His dialogue with Cornwell, as I noted, was generally great (although the actress he was in the scenes with, not so much). But in general his attitude towards Burnham in this episode broke my immersion and made me realize I was watching a show, and that Lorca sided with Burnham for the reason of the overarching plot.

Not to mention we know he's been a dick to much of his crew (including Stamets) in the past, so the warm treatment he's now giving Burnham (and Tyler) seems to come out of nowhere.

Is anyone else having troubles with the stream?

Yes. I got booted off. Was not happy. It had issues before that. This was the first ep that gave me problems. It's bullshit. Cable never drops unless some contractor accidentally cuts a cable while digging.

- Don't trush Ash. Do NOT want to see a romance between him and Burnham.
- I am really bummed that they're making Lorca a bad guy. He sent that admiral deliberately to get rid of her.
- I mean really, the only likeable ones were Lorca and Burnham. Stamets is a bit of a dick (but I like him), Saru too (ditto), and now Lorca is a villain. I don't care about Miss Special Perkypants.
-The Vulcans are more Romulan than Vulcan. They're assholes like they were in ST: Enterprise.
- Sarek. Not father of the year to be sure. But he got a raw deal. Why would the Vulcan make him choice only one? Where's the fucking logic in that?
- Yay Amanda (and Spock name drop).
- Not buying the katra connection. It's like Burnham's his WIFE, not his adopted daughter. Why would he be dying and reach out to her and NOT Amanda, with whom he's bonded?

Not really thrilled with how this is going at this point.

Oh, I believe it, but I see it as a cold-blooded manipulation that he wants people who are personally loyal to him.

In Burnham's case, she's completely dependent on his patronage.

In Ash's case, he sees him as a man who will hate Klingons as much as he does.

Even Tilly is the case because she's a cadet who is easily indoctrinated.

Not bad, desperate. That ship is all he has. He's like a dying man gasping for an extra breath.

*eyes narrow*

Racism is never logical, but it can even be found amongst those who believe themselves quite advanced.

...
When he saved Burnham from the bombing, some his katra became a part of her, so he was calling her without meaning to call her. It's like a broadcast signal to anyone with the proper equipment to pick it up.

There's a difference between being a dick and being demanding in times of war.

Stamets was borderline insubordinate early on. I thought Lorca handled it well.

Seemed pretty Vulcan to me. Their kids were probably the ones tormenting Spock in Yesteryear.

- Sarek. Not father of the year to be sure. But he got a raw deal. Why would the Vulcan make him choice only one? Where's the fucking logic in that?
They're racist. This is not news. They see "Not quite Vulcans" as a liability.
- Not buying the katra connection. It's like Burnham's his WIFE, not his adopted daughter. Why would he die and reach out to her and NOT Amanda, with whom he's bonded?
Maybe she was getting a message too.

Yes, I'm totally on the "he is Voq" train.

- I am really bummed that they're making Lorca a bad guy. He sent that admiral deliberately to get rid of her.

Yes, it's doubly so he sent his lover to be tortured and killed.

- I mean really, the only likeable ones were Lorca and Burnham. Stamets is a bit of a dick (but I like him), Saru too (ditto), and now Lorca is a villain. I don't care about Miss Special Perkypants.

Tilly is awesome and I want a Disney-owned Star Trek series starring her and a talking tribble.

-The Vulcans are more Romulan than Vulcan. They're assholes like they were in ST: Enterprise.

Counterpoint, when we first met other Vulcans, they have were having Sex-Murder Gladiator Fights. Vulcans are less enlightened than Spock and Sarek are enlightened.

- Sarek. Not father of the year to be sure. But he got a raw deal. Why would the Vulcan make him choice only one? Where's the fucking logic in that?

Racism is illogical.

Mind you, they dodged a bullet with Spock.

This one is actually pretty easy as if you're dying, you tend to ponder regrets. Given as far as he knew, his daughter was imprisoned for life for treason and mutiny--I'd understand why she's weighing heavily in his thoughts as he lay dying.

I could do with a little less editorializing from the food slots, although I guess it makes it easier to diet when the thing giving you nourishment also nags you.
I’m thinking that’s Starfleet’s half-assed, pacifistic war-footing. “We need everyone to be in top physical condition, so from now on, the food slots will only dispense precisely calibrated synthetic foods matched exactly to each crewmember’s energy and nutritional requirements!”
“Starfleet regulations require all reasonable accommodation be made for crewmembers dietary requirements, including cultural, religious, and personal preferences. And the medical scans required to make those individually tailored diets useful would be wildly invasive, which violates regulation—”
“Damnation! Then... then...”
“We are allowed to have the computer provide informational content related to health and fitness.”
“Hm...”

The episode has been really good but the streaming alone is pissing me off. Hope they get it fixed by next week.

I got kicked off three times before the stream ran the way it's supposed to. I could have just streamed it through my Xbox app but I didn't feel like booting it up just to watch one hour of programming.

The quality of CBS All Access as a streaming service still leaves a lot to be desired.

If I wanted my food synthesizer slots to provide advertising along with the meals themselves, I'd go to some other space exploration service.

On the bright side: food synthesizer slots with brightly-colored doors that dispense food on a tray. That's one of the most TOS-esque things about the new series and to quote another food service: I'm loving it.
