It picked up from the beginning but I still don't feel I know the cast. Trek pilots have often been underwhelming but they generally succeed in introducing the cast; so did the Orville pilot. We've had two prologue eps and the "real pilot" and I'm still waiting.

The captain is potentially interesting, but the other characters are still too much in Burnham's shadow. And way too much of characters praising her. If she's so awesome, show it! And explain how that fits with the first two eps.

Maybe starting in Season 3, but the characters were somewhat already established by then.

I admit I might be judging this episode wrong and plan to watch it again. Still, everyone seemed like douchebags to me and it felt like a cross between BSG and Alien. Also another reason to see it again is because Lorca seemed to mumble the whole reason for the spores, even though it looked like they were developing the same tech as the Iconian gateway.

The story of the Glen reminded me of a mix between "Terok Nor" and "Genesis" but told in a much more intense, cinematic way.

Something about the Discovery feels very U.S.S. Pegasus: illicit experiments, and a Captain with his own agenda.

I like it. A lot.

I found this episode to be kind of dull. Besides the Captain, the other characters are not connecting with me so far. I'm not sure about the Transwarp Spores. I went to cancel and they gave me a full month free.

Verrrrrrrrry interesting. Another 8 from me.

Burnham having to warm up to the circumstances felt rather real to me. As someone who's inclined to simply hide and stew in my own guilt, I can definitely understand why she was so against being pulled into Discovery, particularly once she figured things out.

I'm not the only one who thought "Genesis Device" when Burnham entered the secret lab, am I? Also, I wonder if these creatures in the lab (and the "kitty") are byproducts of manipulating the universe like this.

Captain Lorca is hard to read at the moment. I get the feeling that while he truly is interested in this "new way to fly" and the possibilities it entails, I think he's also willing to use it as a biological weapon. Is he just telling Michael what she wants to hear? I'm not entirely sure that her initial analysis was wrong.

Lt. Stamets pissed me right off at first but then they allowed him to have some character development. What an amazing concept! A fully-rounded character with legitimate grievances.

Cadet Tilly is adorkable. I hope she does indeed achieve her ambitions one day. And I liked that Burnham started warming up to her towards the end.

Saru seems rather wishy-washy at the moment. I also get the feeling that Lorca and Tyler aren't filling him and Stamets in on everything. (Tyler herself is rather one-note and unremarkable at the moment. I hope she gets some development soon.)
The thing is, I get Saru's point of view, if I see myself as a prey animal. He likes Michael, respects her, but seeing her go from ally to apex predator (even though her own personal reasons were justifiable in her eyes, and she never meant to do harm) makes her dangerous, because she jumped the chain of command with (well intentioned) violence, which frightens him. He wants to trust her again, but he now sees her as unpredictable: dangerous.

Also, yes, adorkable Tilly needs to stick around.

Well that was definitely an improvement. The dialogue is still pretty painful though. They seem to have replaced technobabble with actual scientific jargon, which ends up being a lot more noticeably misused. I'll be even happier if they manage to reduce the number of times Michael's intelligence is referenced down to maybe 3 or 4 per episode though.

The less technobabble the better. As much as I loved the Berman-era series there were times the technobabble made you want to bang your head against a neutronium bulkhead containing bioneural power conduits.

I liked it and will enjoy a second run-through later on. What I like most here is that we've shed all of the no-CBSAA whiners in favor of people actually watching the show.

I have no issue with it feeling a bit like BSG. After all, how many Trek-fans, after watching BSG were wishing that STAR TREK could have a face-lift like this. And just because this is a bit different, it doesn't erase the hundreds and hundreds of episodes that have gone before - and they're all still out there.

I'm intrigued and can't wait for next week.

8/10. Not perfect but I LOVE this episode! So good. Should have been the pilot. The main characters are actually interesting and good mystery!

The one complaint I have (which is a fear I’ve had for awhile is that

Lorc may be Section 31. Groan

Best episode yet. It was nice to finally see the Discovery and get a sense of what they are attempting. There are still plenty of mysteries left though.

On a side note, I tried watching it with Roku, but kept getting kicked out every 3 minutes or so. Had to watch it online. Anyone else have the same problem?
