I have to say, I'm much more intrigued by this episode than the first two. While it didn't feel like a pilot like was touted, it certainly has me very intrigued with where the story is going. I still think they have some ways to go before they get the proper Trek tone down, but that last scene between Michael and Lorca I suppose injected a hint of it.

I'm also surprised with Saru here. Given that I'm reading the novel where he's portrayed as a sort of selfish brat, it could be that I'm surprised with how compassionate he is to Micheal in this episode.

I love Tilly.

Meh. 5/10. Generic stock sci-fi.

Nothing ground-breaking here, and the show doesn't really feel like Star Trek. There were times I wasn't even sure what I was watching.

My biggest turn-off is the characters. I've always found likeable, relate-able characters on Trek from the pilots onwards. On Discovery, the only likeable character is Saru.

I'm disappointed they made Jason Isaacs a predictable, moustache twirling villain with a Southern American accent (wonder why they gave him that...).
Oh wow. Staments is sassy. Wonder why he's being characterized like that..

Tilly is supposed to be comic relief, but the forced awkward humour just falls flat. She might benefit from a laugh track.
The actress playing Landry has decent delivery, but she's playing another 2 dimensional stock character.
I think the problem is all the characters are centered around Burnham. They can't really stand on their own.

Even judging this show as it's own thing, not connected with the Prime timeline, there isn't much to this series. It's still early, but they're digging themselves into a large hole.

So...they open with a contrived and convenient moment of No Real Danger...

Wow...I thought it was a great episode! I'm really intrigued about this "new way to fly" and the science behind it. What about those crewmen who just faded out as they walked? It's nice to see totally new elements introduced in Trek. Really looking forward to the rest of the season!

That didn't feel like Star Trek to me. It was ok, but it felt more BSG than Star Trek and I'm not sure how I feel about that. None of the characters are really likeable yet, even though I did enjoy the stuff with Lorca and I was right about the chemistry with Issacs and Green.

Oh, and we got 2 pop culture references on this show, the first one was the beatles and for some reason at the moment I can't remember the second one.

I think this is the first time a fortune cookie has ever been used in all of Star Trek to help deliver a major plot point. I like this show!

U.S.S. Douchebaggery

The dialog was a little better - or more natural at least. But the plotting was still terrible.

Was it better than last week? I guess.

I gave it a 9. Absolutely loved it. Wow. Loved Captain Orca, Stamets, Tilly, Landry. Loved the interior ship design of Discovery AND the exterior shots. The music in the beginning was excellent as well.

Feel a lot of call back to Enterprise in the interior ship design. And it definitely feels like the first season of a Star Trek show, but that's to be expected. Preview for next week looks awesome. Good stuff.

Fantastic episode all around. Great writing, solid performances. Interesting characters, an intriguing story unfolding, and thank god the new director ditched the dutch angles and lens flares.

Discovery has taken flight and the show is getting its sea legs firmly in place. So far so great.

ENT felt very similar, but they didn't have the budget to achieve what DSC has. Tone and feel are very similar, but with better cinematography, and a bit more serious tone (and much better acting).

THAT should have been the pilot. Science, wonder, discovery (no pun intended), mystery, this episode had the whole package. Also, Tilly is adorable, I want to see more Tilly. Fuck me, I'm in! That was easily a 9/10. I'll think more on it so everything in my head has time to unpack, but that is what I wanted to see.

This show is completely different from the Star Trek we're used to, so there's going to be some expected push back. For me, it doesn't even feel like Star Trek. But after this episode, they certainly have my attention. It was very intriguing and I'm interested to see where they are going with this.

Verrrrrrrrry interesting. Another 8 from me.

Burnham having to warm up to the circumstances felt rather real to me. As someone who's inclined to simply hide and stew in my own guilt, I can definitely understand why she was so against being pulled into Discovery, particularly once she figured things out.

I'm not the only one who thought "Genesis Device" when Burnham entered the secret lab, am I? Also, I wonder if these creatures in the lab (and the "kitty") are byproducts of manipulating the universe like this.

Captain Lorca is hard to read at the moment. I get the feeling that while he truly is interested in this "new way to fly" and the possibilities it entails, I think he's also willing to use it as a biological weapon. Is he just telling Michael what she wants to hear? I'm not entirely sure that her initial analysis was wrong.

Lt. Stamets pissed me right off at first but then they allowed him to have some character development. What an amazing concept! A fully-rounded character with legitimate grievances.

Cadet Tilly is adorkable. I hope she does indeed achieve her ambitions one day. And I liked that Burnham started warming up to her towards the end.

Saru seems rather wishy-washy at the moment. I also get the feeling that Lorca and Tyler aren't filling him and Stamets in on everything. (Tyler herself is rather one-note and unremarkable at the moment. I hope she gets some development soon.)

Maybe starting in Season 3, but the characters were somewhat already established by then.

I admit I might be judging this episode wrong and plan to watch it again. Still, everyone seemed like douchebags to me and it felt like a cross between BSG and Alien. Also another reason to see it again is because Lorca seemed to mumble the whole reason for the spores, even though it looked like they were developing the same tech as the Iconian gateway.
