G, PG, R... just put in a thoughtful, decent movie with a solid blend of adventure and action. Not pointless action. No stupid callbacks or "easter eggs" or whatever the new term is. Just a movie that uses its own wits and no nostalgic crutches. "Beyond" was great in that regard, though at some point another explanation or prequel or explanation of how the Federation got started can't be used for every movie. But "Beyond" worked and worked wonders. It's what "Into Darkness" should have been.

I felt bad because the characters felt bad. The look on Kirk's face in the pod as the Enterprise went down was so evocative that I couldn't help but feel with him.

I didn't react to the ENT-D because it was played for laughs, with Data's line, and Picard's almost non-reaction to walking through the debris, kicking over his chair and artifacts because they're just "material possessions." I had more emotional reaction "All Good Things" when the ENT-D of the future drove in to the anomaly than in that film. Again, because of how the characters were reacting.

Same thing with the original Enterprise. Kirk's reaction drives my mood. "My God, Bones. What have I done?" Perfectly cements the reaction.

IMHO, the "D" crash was solid but Kirk's was better. The setup for "D" felt played out largely seriously despite some occasional forced jokes (e.g. "He must be the ONLY Engineer in STARFLEET who DOESN'T go to ENGINEERING!") since every movie starting with IV had to do the comedy act, sigh.. And Data's humor was largely in check. Picard's nonchalance over an ancient irreplaceable artifact was somewhat bizarre... or artifacts, one is the alien clay pot and the other is his ship.

But, yeah, Kirk - regarding the destruction of his vessel and aftermath. That's first rate and an eventful enough situation that, while 23rd century humans did keep emotions in check, it doesn't mean they're all robots now in the way the 24th century (inconsistently) theorized. The TNG movies weren't terribly strict on character archetypes, which hurts given the TNG crew had seven seasons of build-up now being thrown out for the sake of some generic action flicks with the Star Trek name pasted onto them.

I just got the Beyond soundtrack and howcome the song on the end credits isn't on the soundtrack? Was that a licensing thing?

Yeah, that's Sledgehammer by Rihanna. I think it's licensing.

Although I don't think the slightly extended Beyond end credits version is available anywhere but YouTube?

rihanna released the song as a single, it's on iTunes. the end credits are available on the expanded album that came out about 6 months after the initial soundtrack, you can find it here: Star Trek Beyond: The Deluxe Edition

varese did complete soundtracks for all three films, but beyond is the only one that came so quickly after the film hit theaters. all three are highly recommended.

Did anyone notice the floating hologram graphics in Avengers: Endgame near the start showing the dusted (and presumed dusted) characters of Dr. Strange and Scott Lang were identical to the ones at the end of Star Trek: Beyond showing the USS Franklin crew's cases being closed at Yorktown HQ?

If only Beyond had made 2b less than Endgames total we'd be waiting on ST5 next summer

Both sets are transparent holo-headshots, but the stylistic trappings aren't the same.

I can't do a direct comparison because my Endgame is blueray, but at a glance they looked identical. I guess not though.

I know Endgame shared some designers with Beyond and I wonder if they have the same company doing all the interfaces/graphics.

Yes, at least a couple of people mentioned having spotted that back in July 2016:

Since this really isn't news or substantial enough a topic to drive a thread of its own, I'll move it over to the pinned Grading & Discussion thread for Star Trek Beyond.

Please be sure to hold onto your drinks while thread is in motion...

It did feel like an original series episode, and its growing on me more and more. plus It also felt like if AOS was a television show Beyond would be a Two-Parter with Part 1 being the season 1 finale and part 2 being the season opener. the rest of the season could be them being assigned to different ship while the NCC-1701-A was being built (which we saw in the Boldly Go comic).
