Spoilers So, what do we think of Season 2 now that it's done?

I enjoyed both seasons, but I liked this one a bit better. Having Seven as a regular of course helped with that. But I also felt that this season had a more clear idea of what it was doing. The plot holes I could point out didn't bother me too much. And Juratti, who often annoyed me in Season 1, was much more interesting and likable for me in this season.

I'm pumped as hell for Season 3, and even more so for Seven's series.

I liked what they did with Juratti in season 2 and what they did with her character was really good storytelling .I wish we would've gotten a Rios spinoff series or Kore as a time traveling Aegis agent. I'm also looking forward to season 3.

Sir Patrick wants a movie.

I don't know if it can be done. Paramount had to carry him over the finish line on Picard.

And casting such an "old" actor was both a blessing and a curse - they did their best to accomodate him but I do know that the whole thing demanded every last ounce of his strength. LeVar Burton even made a remark that, by the end of season 3's shooting, the entire rest of the TNG cast had to help Sir Patrick in various ways because he was struggling so much with everything (I absolutely cannot blame him, I'd crumble after two DAYS of shooting and he endured shooting two whole SEASONS back to back). Casting a much older actor in a leading role also comes with certain restrictions - they also had to accomodate the shooting schedule of the show because Sir Patrick gets too tired in the afternoons. So, they started extremely early in the mornings. Etc etc. You have to be willing to go to these extra lengths, and sadly, a lot of studios are not, and I'm not sure if casting Sir Patrick will pave the way for more shows like this, or if it even paved the way for casting an older actress for SNW - she's 70 and not the leading role, I therefore don't see any of the "accomodation issues" popping up that they had with Sir Patrick.

A movie is different. Much less time needed for shooting. It’s only like two hours of material. (I doubt Paramount would suddenly go down the Lord Of The Rings path when it comes to movie length.) The issue with Sir Patrick’s exhaustion when it comes to the end of shooting PIC was that it was two whole seasons shot back to back without any sort of break save for one during XMas. Anyone would have crumbled towards the end of that, even much younger actors would have found this extremely tough. It was like a whole YEAR of shooting. AND he’s the leading role, which means he’s in a whole lot of scenes and everyone relies on him to carry the show. I don’t think anyone can blame him for being exhausted after that. A movie would be different. He could wrap this up in like three months, maybe. It’s not as big a deal. He would have to be accommodated, sure, but would not have to be as extreme as it was with the show.

However.

I can’t see Paramount going for a movie with an 80something lead actor and a 60something (or something) crew surrounding him. Movies are different beasts than television shows. Paramount’s focus when it comes to Trek movies has been action, action, action. Even the TNG movies were like that even though action wasn’t exactly the stuff the show and cast was beloved for. I could see guest appearances or supporting characters, like it was done in JW Dominion with Grant, Sattler and Malcolm. But not the main ones. They might want to roll in the cash on the nostalgia train, but they won’t want to roll it in with the TNG cast in leading roles. Hollywood’s obsession with youth in movies is even more extreme than it is with the television part. (And it’s already extreme there, PIC is already an exception.)

Also, let’s not forget that these are all actors promoting their show right now. They will say ANYTHING to draw attention to PIC’s final season. It’s all part of the promotion game. Sir Patrick has also said he’d think about coming back for a fourth season. The only thing that has changed is the tune - in the days back then it was “nah this is the end I won’t do any more” (to ramp up the price for future participation) and now that he doesn’t have to do this kind of thing anymore he’s chill like “yeah why not”. All part of the game. Of course Paramount could decide to do something but this will not be decided because Sir Patrick and Frakes said things at a convention. This will be decided by one factor only and that’s “how much money could this make us and how much would we have to spend”. It’s show business. Emphasis on business.

Though I was happy for de Lancie to get the work and Spiner as Oong Soong was slightly amusing. I don't know if I will rewatch S2 anytime soon because thinking about the plot gives me hives.

I didn't like it as much as Season 1. It was silly and fun but the ending where ALL of the wonderful crew of La Sirena was
broken up for TNG's cast left a sour taste in my mouth.

DISCO I'm more forgiving of because there was so much drama behind the scenes of S1 that it took two full seasons to right the ship, but at least it's generally gotten stronger season to season (my opinions on the driving forces of S4 aside). PIC seems so much more aimless - there's just so much in the way of characters serving story, as opposed to the other way around, and the quality is all over the place. S1 I thought was flawed, but there are still bits I watch for enjoyment and bits of world-building I like tremendously. S2 was just a massive mess in just about every way you can name. The S3 TNG reunion is obviously what TPTB have wanted all along, and it really shows with how quickly they kicked most of the new characters to the curb.

I admit that when I found out they weren't returning to the 23rd century, I lost all interest in the show. I'm in the minority who thinks the far future show is inferior to the prequel.

Whether or not folks want it to happen doesn't mean it isn't kind of the right thing to happen. To be blunt, Stewart is getting on. If there is a time to do a TNG reunion it's now, while we still have them all and they are all willing and able.

I generally agree but the presentation at the end was that this was Picard's crew and would be staying together. I think if it had been more open ended, less gathering on the bridge it would land better.

As it was, it felt off-putting with Season 2. Season 3 even more so.

To me, the Season 1 cast were crowbarred into a story in which most of them didn't belong in Season 2. I'd have liked a clean slate for the second season with a mostly new cast apart from Stewart and then the big shindig for the third.

Surely whether or not a TNG reunion is wanted or not doesn't take away from the fact that it is the logical thing to happen in a final season though? I feel like it's the kind of thing that a show like Picard would deliberately resist until the very end, but would ultimately pay out on.

From the sounds of things, whatever story they had initially planned for S2 got torpedoed by having to essentially break the cast off into pairs for more than half of the story as a COVID precaution. I disagree with so very many of the story choices the creatives ultimately made and which characters they decided to prioritize over others, but I suspect no matter what, the season would have wound up pretty janky on a storytelling level. But it's not the characters that were an issue, it was the circumstances.

I don't feel like it is. This wasn't something being built toward - the reason this wasn't all a TNG continuation to start was because it was the only way they could get Sir Patrick aboard. Heck, even now he pushes back against calling it a "reunion". I know there's a meme of post-TOS Star Trek not getting good until the third season, but it feels like if what they *really* wanted was TNG S8, they should have just kept wheedling with Sir Patrick until he agreed to do a mini-series or something.

I feel like it was just bad writing that Season 2's crew didn't make sense. They had them all moved around when instead start Season 2 with, "Picard and company are flying around on the Mermaid when Q transports them back in time."
