If there is one thing that's a bit of a turnoff already is the outfits on both Smith and the actress who is playing the companion. I'd put it as an analogy to singers on American Idol doing big band even though they are like 20 years old. It's kind of the same here. These outfits just look too "old-fashioned" for my taste and too grown up for those who are in the respective roles. I'm not saying they should be in jeans and a t-shirt or anything like that, but what about somewhere in between what Tennant wore and what Ecc wore?
Also, I understand Dr Who being outlandish and that might be the reason for the outfits, but physically so far, I'm having a bit of trouble getting past it, again because of the age and look of the people who are going to be in the roles.
I really don't get how people somehow think Smith's outfit is anomolous to what was chosen for Eccleston and Tennant, whereas I think the three outfits knit (ha ha) together nicely. Classic Who predominately dressed in very 19th Century outfits, whereas the 21st Century version goes for 20th Century look
So we have WW2-ish 9
40's spiv/70's cop/90s indie singer 10
30's Vet/50's college professor 11
They have a young actor playing a very old man, so they've dressed him as the very epitome of the slightly mad professor. Works perfectly as far as I can see.
