^^ Maybe he's just a big fan of Tucker Carlson?
The Doctor is a big fan of popcorn

Maybe popcorn can be the new Jelly babies

it's not like he's got a stalk of celery pinned to his jacket.
I actually like the idea of the Doctor looking like a dork again. As much as I loved Tennant, it always kind of seemed wrong how he was always the coolest-looking guy in the room. Part of the charm of the old shows is how completely strange and out-of-place the Doctor always seemed to look. It really helped to emphasize his "alien-ness."

He's the Doctor. He should be the coolest-looking guy in the room, and RTD was right to make him as such.
But The Doctor has always managed that despite his attire. It's all about his charisma and presence. So what if he has a 40-foot scarf, a crooked stovepipe hat, a celery stalk on his lapel, a question mark filled vest, or a multi-color dreamcoat?I actually like the idea of the Doctor looking like a dork again. Quoted for truth.
Now, I'm not convinced that they won't be able to make Smith's costume work somehow, because, well, fashion is a weird and fickle world and often relies as much on the sex appeal and charisma of the person wearing the clothes as it does on the clothes itself.
But, yeah, I tend to think the Doctor should be the coolest-looking guy in the room. Eccentric, yes, but also cool.

...you're wearing one right now, aren't you? Be honest...

I need to really say this again, was Tennant's outfit initially cool, or did he make it cool? I happen to think the latter as I don't recall too many people running around in skinny pinstripe suits apart from Jarvis Cocker and he was so 1994!
The funniest thing is that I can still remember the complaints when 10's outfit was revealed as well.
And I'm not sure the Doctor should ever be the coolest man in the room, I'd rather he was the cleverest man in the room.
Again a lot of this will come down to how Smith sells it.

That's a fair enough question. As I said above, I'm not convinced that Smith's outfit won't end up registering as being cool (albeit in a retro sort of way) with the not-we, because fashion is a strange and fickle world that relies as much on the sex appeal and charisma of the wearer as it does on the clothes themselves.
I wouldn't be surprised if the bowtie ends up going, though.
I'd prefer he be both. But at the very least, I don't think he should look goofy or dorky. He should be eccentric, but he shouldn't look stupid. It's like the difference between Christopher Ecclestone's costume and Sylvester McCoy's (or, for that matter, the difference between McCoy's in TOS and McCoy's in the TV movie). Ecclestone didn't dress normally, but it didn't register as being completely out of place, either. A fella could walk in most rooms wearing Ecclestone's costume without looking fundamentally bad even if he looked slightly odd.
The Doctor doesn't need to look cool. He IS cool. The truly Cool can wear whatever they want and look good, because THEY'RE wearing it.
and I'd much rather he was the cleverest man in the room, than the coolest.

Well I love the jacket and wouldn't mind one myself, then again maybe I'm just getting old.Of the whole thing the bowtie is the only bit I'm really not 100% sold on but it might grow on me, and it does help the look. It might be that they switch it around with a regular tie or no tie to mix things up a bit, the same way Tennant had different ties and sometimes no tie/collarless shirt.
Also, he never wore clip-on ties -- he tied his own every morning![]()

You mean there are grown men (other than Homer Simpson) who do use clip-on ties?![]()
