Series 5 trailer

If there is one thing that's a bit of a turnoff already is the outfits on both Smith and the actress who is playing the companion. I'd put it as an analogy to singers on American Idol doing big band even though they are like 20 years old. It's kind of the same here. These outfits just look too "old-fashioned" for my taste and too grown up for those who are in the respective roles. I'm not saying they should be in jeans and a t-shirt or anything like that, but what about somewhere in between what Tennant wore and what Ecc wore?

Also, I understand Dr Who being outlandish and that might be the reason for the outfits, but physically so far, I'm having a bit of trouble getting past it, again because of the age and look of the people who are going to be in the roles.

I really don't get how people somehow think Smith's outfit is anomolous to what was chosen for Eccleston and Tennant, whereas I think the three outfits knit (ha ha) together nicely. Classic Who predominately dressed in very 19th Century outfits, whereas the 21st Century version goes for 20th Century look

So we have WW2-ish 9
40's spiv/70's cop/90s indie singer 10
30's Vet/50's college professor 11

They have a young actor playing a very old man, so they've dressed him as the very epitome of the slightly mad professor. Works perfectly as far as I can see.

I just watched the trailer on the BBC America website.....underwhelming......

But, I'll keep an open mind and watch a full episode before deciding whether or not to DVR it.

I'm surprised by how soon I'm ready to start the Eleventh Doctor's adventures already and I think it's due to the trailer. Had I not seen this right after End of Time Part II I wouldn't be as excited I think. I felt this way after Nine regenerated into Ten as well. I was excited for The Christmas Invasion.

I'm not quite sold on Smith [ETA: meaning that I'm just not anticipating his debut as much as I thought I would be]. Re-watching the preview, I'm still getting that Coy and Vance Duke feeling.

It isn't the costume, I don't mind that. I'm not convinced that goofy is the right decision for the show-and he is a goofy looking guy in a goofy looking costume, let's not kid ourselves- but I don't personally mind it.

And I'm not bothered by his age.

Maybe it would help if the BBC put out some decent publicity images or a clip of Smith acting (rather than running around chasing monsters).

I suspect that the next trailer will have dialogue from both Matt and Karen, at least I'm hoping so. I don't know either actor so I'm like the majority of people...I am holding out hope that both of them will be compelling if not good actors. They both have very big shoes to fit...we won't be able to judge them until the first episode is broadcast.

Neither of RTD's Doctors looked goofy or had goofy costumes. Hell, Tennant was damned trendy.

I remember when photos of the Ninth Doctor were leaked, back when word outside of the the production was that the show was most likely a reboot rather than a continuation -- and there was an outcry of Doctor Who suddenly being "Matrix"-ized because of how dark it was.

In hindsight, the suit makes sense and it's definitely a WW2/working class, but calling it the Matrix seems silly now.

What happened to the man who used to say that DW should be about looking to the future and not dredging up the past? Daleks, Silurians & Sea Devils, River Song and the Weeping Angels (and rumours of Cybermen for the finale from often reliable people).

Is he really that worried that people won't watch?
I think it's just as likely, if not more so, that the BBC is worried that people won't watch. Daleks and Cybermen may be network choices, not necessarily Moffat's choices.

I have faith in the Moff.

My favorite description for 9 was "Doctor Wholigan".

Was he?

I mean I think the Tennant costume became trendy, but when it was first revealed all it looked like was a rip off of Jarvis Cocker!

It's funny and I wonder if the article is still knocking about, but when Smith's costume was first revealed some fashionista claimed it was too trendy, and had been conciously designed to refelct multiple upcoming trends (namely the doc MArtin boots, the bow tie etc)

This will all come down to how Smith plays the Doctor. short of 6's outfit if he's the right man for the job he'll pull it off no matter what he's wearing.

How would other people have dressed Smith? I say this because my first thought (backed up by the posting I did at the time) was that they'd go for the tweed jacket professor look for him because it seemed to suit the mad sceintist aura he has about him.

I don't see why they could not bring the real cybermen back
Gag me with a spoon. Please.
Listen to "Spare Parts" and then watch The Tenth Planet, Tomb of the Cybermen, and The Invasion. Please.

The coat rack returns to the TARDIS

Ooo! Nice catch! Hopefully this means The Eleventh Doctor will have a hat! :D

Bingo. I've said it many times before, but I'll say it again. The Eleventh Doctor's outfit reminds me a lot of The Second Doctor and that's only a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

All hail the Moff!

;)

People are really setting themselves up for a fall with this Moffat worship. There are still going to be poor episodes next year and with six scripts to write and a show to run I can tell you now there'll even be a poor Moffat script in there.

Some people are setting themselves up for a fall yes, not me. I fully expect Moffat to have a hit/miss ration similar to RTDs if I'm honest, but like RTD I suspect even his duff scripts will have some redeeming features.

But at the end of the day I've been a fan of the guy long before Who even came back, so I am looking forward to it. I don't expect it to be 100% brilliant all the time though...some people really do though!
