We don't know what it's going to lead to.
We know it's not going to lead to TOS. That ended forever in 1969.We don't know what it's going to lead to.
Are you saying an Asian can't have the last name "Kyle"?As an Asian myself, I don't understand why they don't make him Sulu or into a brand new Asian character, if this is true.
The only reason they can't become TOS characters is the assumption that characters must be static and be identical to TOS presentations.I think what many want is that if this show is suppose to be set in the same continuity is the ability to pretend these characters are the same characters from TOS in their head or will become them. If it's not in the same continuity then any need to pretend is not needed and the question then becomes. Does this show feel like it's Star Trek in terms of spirit. The ultimate thing people care bout though is if it's good and entertaining. If it is that then all that stuff simple becomes just head canon thoughts.
Who says they are not interested? The only cynical opinion is that these characters are static, unchanging, cutouts, who couldn't possibly have more history to them beyond what was shown. If you’re doing a prequel to someone else’s success and have no real interest in the characters they created, it’s a very cynical enterprise indeed.

Hardly.
They've decided to do a series set aboard the Enterprise five years earlier than we've seen it up until now, for several good reasons - mostly commercial, but they had a very good audience reception to the three core cast members that they put together for another series a few years ago, so they have every right to claim that success and to try to build on it and on what they've learned in putting together this series. The other cast is a matter of filling out and deciding what specific characters and what kinds of characters are likely to be useful in doing what they intend to do.
This Pike, Una and Spock are already as much if not more the creation of the actors and the STD writers and producers as they are derived from "The Cage."
Chapel's barely a character. She's not a sculpture, just a piece of marble with a few chunks chiseled out. Let the character grow. Create a statue.Sure, but everyone else is optional. If you don’t think Chapel works for today’s audiences, don’t use Chapel. Create your own character.

What's really there? She's a nurse. Her fiance went missing. She has a thing for Spock. Should that be the limit of her character?Sad to say, but she has as much character as Uhura. Neither is as developed as she should be, but that doesn’t mean what’s there should be disregarded. Use the character or don’t.

Her "personality" was what ever that week's script needed. Scotty was more developed. Her back story comes from one episode and never touched on again.Please. She has a surprisingly fleshed out back story for TOS and enough screen time to establish her personality. Scotty barely gets more character work.
It’s perfectly fine for them to build on what we’ve seen of her, but not to replace it. Hopefully it’s handled well in the show itself, but what we got in the trailer was very much a 21st-century trope.
The old stuff doesn't always jive with what we saw before( even when it was last week) .I agree that is good thing to go far. The question though is does the new stuff jive with what we have seen before. Does it feel like we are truly seeing another aspect to a old character and now that we know about it the change makes sense or does it feel like a change that doesn't fit with the character we know.

What's being discard at this moment? We've seen a brief character trailer.Nah, she was no more malleable than any of the other supporting cast. The TOS films went on to build on what was there for the secondary characters, not discard it. SNW can do that with Chapel too, if they want.
