Kurtzman: 2 more live-action shows in the works

When I heard of the Academy idea back in 1990, I virtually puked. Many did. Why would it be any better now given a string of prequels since 2000 that, at best, are highly contentious and divisive and potentially implosive? It's just another barrel-scrapin' prequel. Watching frat party cadets seems incredibly inane, we know how they all aged since then, you know they're going to muck up something that makes the transition from young-Kirk to James T Kirk circa 1966 implausible at best, just coast on stereotype mannerisms and nostalgiawank callbacks and not do anything of depth or detail, and I just gave myself a coronary when imagining a meld of "Star Trek" with "Police Academy 5"...

It's also worth noting that while there are a lot of shows on TV dealing with high school drama - there are very few shows dealing with college drama. Starfleet Academy is the equivalent of college, not high school, and a show about college may not appeal to the same young audience that a show about high school does.

I pissed off my entire Twitter audience because I posted this - despite saying it wasn't real - they all thought it was. :guffaw:

People just don't READ TWEETS properly anymore! (Honestly tho, I'd say it's all because a lot of people just want for this series to happen...)

Just pretending!

The problem is: You need to be my age (or know when TOS premiered its first episode on NBC ;)) to get an idea that "Yeah, this MUST be fake/an in joke..." off the bat, just by looking at it ;)

I was born 20 years later and even I know the premiere date. ;)

You can see how upset everyone got.

I would be up for a Quark sitcom. Quark gets arrested for a small crime but instead of a slap on the wrist a Ferengi judge sentences him to 3 years teaching 10 to 12 year old Ferengi kids at a Ferengi school. He has to teach a civics class based on Rom's reforms. He is always trying to undermine the principal of the school by sneaking in "real" Ferengi thinking only to always being shut down by adorkable Ferengi kids who come up with the most kind but also weird idea's. Despite that Quark warms up to them and even becomes something of a dad figure to the Fat Ferengi kid whose dad hates money.

What about Starfleet Summer Camp. Take the Academy idea and merge it with Meatballs or something. Turns out Kirk,Spock,McCoy and the whole gang first meet as 10 year olds at Camp Khitomer. Turns out a rival Klingon camp nearby called Camp River of Blood filled with 10 year old Klingons don't like the nearby human Camp and then all sorts of pranks and shenanigans go on. All to be settled by the big Parisiis Square Event at the end of summer. Also of course Spock who is one of the older boys in camp looses his virginity to a strong female warrior. Kirk uses the Corbonite Manuever to scare away some Klingon boys from knocking over their canoe. All sorts of fun things.

I'm good with a Pike series, but an Academy series? Ugh. The last thing I care about is a bunch of older teens and young twenty somethings sleeping around and then getting pissed at each other for sleeping around. And then repeating that same plot line every week.

How about a show called "The Federation" done ala West Wing style.

Undoubtedly they would be the children of our favorite characters, so there would be plenty of cameos. And it would inevitably feel like Boy Meets World / Girl Meets World.

I absolutely don't think they'll do this, but I'd love a Trek series which is exploration-based, but not starship-based. Like say they discover a huge megastructure (dyson sphere, ringworld, etc) or a large virtual world. The lack of any spaceships could theoretically keep VFX costs kinda low, with most of the filming taking place outside on location.

I would really like that.

There is no reason why it would be this way.

I would actually be interested in something like this! I'm not big on starships and space, but I would love for them to explore the idea of a Dyson Sphere, for example. That concept has always fascinated me for some reason.
