Alex Kurtzman on streaming movies and the future of Trek

Would this streaming movie format be a way to do something like the [Picard season 3 follow-up] Star Trek: Legacy concept?

Alex Kurtzman:
Sure

A Legacy movie sounds intriguing.

Seven has never been in a Trek movie (she's been in two series, but never a movie).

This may be too difficult to answer, but are all the big decisions being held off until Skydance takes over [expected some time around mid-2025]? And have you had any early discussions with any of the Skydance people to talk about the future of the franchise?

Alex Kurtzman:
We haven’t. I have huge respect for [Skydance CEO and incoming Paramount chairman and CEO] David [Ellison] and for Skydance. We haven’t had any conversations because they haven’t engaged yet with the company. But here’s what I do know: I know that David Ellison is a huge, huge fan of Star Trek. He was one of the producers on the films that we made, and he loves it. He loves it a lot. So I’m sure those conversations will happen eventually.

Right now our focus is on Strange New Worlds, which is about to start [production on season 4], and we’re two weeks out from wrapping [production] on season 1 of Starfleet Academy. And man, making those shows is such a full contact sport that I’ll be honest with you, we’ve got more than enough on our plate right now. I think the minute we start doing too much, the quality of the show suffers, and our job is to protect from that.

I find Kurtzman's candor refreshing (When I worked on the "Birds of Prey on DVD" campaign, it was radio silence from Warner Bros. until the DVD was officially announced. :shifty: )

So it sounds like the only Star Trek we’ll be getting this year is the S31 movie and season 3 of SNW, and the only Trek in 2026 will be season 1 of SFA (if season 4 of SNW doesn’t premiere until 2027.) Sounds good to me. I also agree with Kurtzman that too much production affects quality.

Being that season 4 is about to start shooting in only a few weeks, I'm sure we'll get it sometime in 2026. Probably around the same time of year that season 3 will be airing, whenever that is. They'll want to keep the ball rolling and put out a season a year, like the previous two. The only reason we didn't get a season last year was because of the writers and actors strike.

So:

2025: S31 movie and SNW season 3

2026: SFA season 1 and SNW season 4(?)

2027: SFA season 2 and SNW season 5 (possibly the last season?)
I think it's possible (even likely) that another project gets greenlit towards the end of this year - maybe the sitcom idea.

Depends if they make a big thing of the 60th anniversary after they fumbled the 50th. Another steaming movie might be possible for September 2026 if they get it in production sometime this year.

And then there's whatever Paramount Pictures are doing on the theatrical release side. I don't think anyone is holding their breath on that.

There is still a considerable chance that SFA gets axed before the airing of its first episode. Especially if the S31 outrage sparks further momentum.

It will be hard to rationalize another Trek streaming movie if the first is met with so much ridicule and rejection.

They need to change the overall trajectory of the franchise. Maybe some of the upcoming Paramount execs made sure that S31 fails so they can start Star Trek over again under a new management and a new production team.

There will be other Trek streaming movies.

They may not be Section 31 films, but there will be other movies.

Alex Kurtzman is not going to be fired.

Get used to it right now.

Starfleet Academy has already been renewed for Season 2.

Sorry if that disappoints you. :(

I think you overdosed on Luve Stupis.
