Kurtzman: 2 more live-action shows in the works

An interesting idea - in fact Discovery's original idea - but it would still be kinda expensive.

IMHO if they're thinking of going this route they should probably look to what TOS did and see how they could reuse existing CBS standing sets - build entire episodes around them - in order to reduce production costs.

That's what I was thinking. For example if I was going to do it and it last 5 years. I think I would go with.

1 Season 1=Young Picard aboard the Stargazer. Most of the stuff will be confined to the ship.

2 Season 2. Klingons come to earth in 1969. Get to use modern day landscapes and locations just redress them as 1969.

3 Season 3 =A human cadet trapped in Rura Pentha. Lots of indoor cave sets. Get to also reuse your Klingon makeup from season 2.

4 The Borg before they were Borg and they lived in a near present day environment before figuring out how to connect to each other through tech which of course will lead to them becoming a hive collective. Dress up our world and make it slightly alien and near future.

5 For your final season I think you want to go Enterprise. Have a time traveler visiting all the Enterprises looking to catch another time traveler. It would be kind of expensive but it's also the final season so you want to go with a bang.

What about a new Trek series that takes place entirely in and around the Vasquez Rocks?

Maybe a space station series with the entire cast of characters are alien and there's little to no humans there. It would probably be expensive task but with the success from DISCO and CBS Allaccess --Allegedly-- and the Picard series has already been approved of a season 2; it skies the limit in making as many Trek series CBS can muster.

As I've said in the past, I think a Starfleet Academy show would be hard to pull off - which is why it's been frequently discussed, but never done. If it focused on relatively petty teen drama (or, more aptly, young adult drama with actors in the range of 28-35) I think it would alienate a lot of Trek viewers who are looking for more high-concept sci-fi plots. And it would probably still be a bit too nerdy to pull in a lot of casual viewers not into Trek in general.

I think the best bet would be basically to go with a sci-fi version of Harry Potter or Buffy. That is to say, have the coming of age drama there, but have it be a general background noise of the seasons, largely confined to the B plots. But have an ongoing, A plot which involves some bigger stakes as well. Maybe the cadets find a secret holoprogram of uncertain origin and spend much of the season exploring it? Maybe they have reason to believe that one of their instructors isn't who he seems to be? Maybe they discover another augment in suspended animation deep under San Francisco? Lots of possibilities here.

That damn Academy pitch goes back to at LEAST 1991 and I do not know why it keeps creeping back up...............
Because studio execs see "Young hot kids + Star Trek." Because it's younger people in a school setting, they get to add soapy romance storylines, you get a hunky bad boy. To them that screams money.

No season arcs? In 2020, that's doomed to fail.

A season of 8-10 episodes in an arc might work, but the Arrowverse habit of 24 episode seasons, with the big bad being invulnerable until the end, is tiring. Don't get me wrong - I don't want a return to episodes, but story arcs and story+character development, threaded through a season, would be a nice change.

I think Disco did fairly well

Younger and Edgier?

Fair enough. You’re the first I’ve seen on record.
It must appeal to more than just me, given the books and comics that I have read over the years.

But, I'm definitely interested because I would like see Starfleet officers becoming Starfleet officers. It reminds me of one of my first scifi novels by Heinlein, "Space Cadet" and all of that really is a story I think is interesting.

I’m keen on it, have been for years. As long as it doesn’t completely bash me over the head with the soap opera-ness of it all.
Yeah if done properly I guess it could be good, but my fear is the soapy, teen angst angle being over done. I’ll wait and see on anything. I would love me some Pike though.
