So…
Some of you may be wondering what happened to the Luna project. Is it dead, will it happen?
In a typical frenzy, I hyper-focused on another design, an old design that I hadn’t thought much on in a long time, and thought was beyond my abilities to do. It still occupied the back of mind as something I might one day tackle again. Again, it was one of many projects I lost 3D wise. Yes, I still have the old threads to look at and the paper designs. But… It was never finished. So it resided in limbo.
Back when I was working on it before I was winging it. I didn’t know what I was doing 3D wise, and the paper designs lacked a lot of detail (any detail to be honest). Oh, I’d built a version based on the paper design in Milkshape 3D to play with in Bridge Commander. It was a bad mesh, a poor model and not something I was happy to share publicly, hence why only a few people ever got a copy. It too was lost in the great data purge that happened. And maybe it’s no big loss that it was.
The former Wolf/Mako Class design was drawn out on paper back in 1997 for a fan club. I hoped to see it built one day, and someone else was determined to do just that – as either a physical model, or a 3D model. The idea of having a 3D mesh to do as we want with was… Far reaching at the time. But real life caught up with the other person (marriage, children, grandchildren now – lots happened in 26 years). So, it was handed back to me. I am de-facto retired, have no kids (does a cat count?) and have plenty of time on my hands. And I’d pitched the original concept, done the original paper plans. Coming full circle back to me was not a bad thing.
13 years ago, was the last time I attempted to build this ship, and I was building two versions of it (the Wolf and the Horizon). I radically changed the design when I started the last 3D build, moving to more curvaceous lines. I… Argued with a lot of people about the merits of the design, changed my mind about things a billion times, and got caught up in tiny details. At times I was a prize asshole about the things.
But that was then, and this is now.
Since then, I have grown as a person. I’ve had major surgery a few times on my ticker (and more is on the horizon) facing death and doing deals with them so I don’t croak yet. My partner and I were attacked in our home in a brutal way that has left its mark on us both. We’re fine, we have recovered, but the ghost of what happened still lingers over things. I admit I had a full-on nervous breakdown over what happened and ended up in hospital. Mentally it was a massive knock. But I also found out I was autistic and learned a heap of other things about myself I didn’t know before.
I am not the same person who worked on the USS Horizon back in 2010. And that’s reflected in the way I work now, and how I do things. Going back to the Horizon has been interesting, because it’s brought back a lot of memories. That’s why the design has changed again from when I last did it. I’ve changed, so it’s going to change to reflect what I’ve learned and what I know.
Nope, I don’t know it all – and I love saying that. That’s why I ask for feedback and thoughts on things. Part of sharing all of this work is tasking the group mind about things, doing things that work for all and having fun. And having fun is the sole reason I’ve built (and rebuilt) these many ships. It is fun.
What does that have to do with the Luna?
Lots.
The Ingram, Clarke and Horizon were in the back of my mind, sitting with the pain of the loss of them. They had become intertwined with the loss. I rebuilt the Clarke and one of the Ingrams, and it helped a great deal. Rebuilding the Horizon, working on it again – sharing the ideas and seeing how you all react to it? Helps as well, because it’s maybe the healing I need at the moment.
I’ll come back and do the Luna, but at the moment I need some healing energy and working on the Horizon (now a Delphis Class ship), is helping to close a wound. Hope that makes sense.
As a side note, I have been playing with various logos again, tightening things up. I will bore you again with new/fresh takes on them at some point, lol. And more pretty 3D renders as well.
Right, enough waffle. If you took the time to read all this, I thank you. If you skipped it all, you haven’t missed that much, lol.
Comments always welcome, and or course – more soon.
