I just saw the new trailer! (Spoilers? Well, yes!)

After that he's an officer, second in command after Spock, and has every right to take command.

He's a cadet and not qualified to do anything more than lend a helping hand at a station on the bridge or another post elsewhere in the ship. He's a warm body, that's it.

After I watch the movie I'll come back here and tell you what actually happens.

In TNG, it seems that Troi gets the "field test" version of the Kobayashi Maru when she's going for Commander. Could it not be similar for Kirk?

My brother's an AF Captain (full lieutenant in Trek terms) Right now he's "in school" taking additional training to qualify him to be aircraft commander.

My father is a retired Major General (some kind of Admiral in Trek terms) When he got his first star they sent him to additional training colloquially known as "charm school."

Based on our own military (which some of us seem very keen to do) it would seem that the Kobayashi Maru could logically fit in anywhere in an officer's career before being put in the upper part of the chain of command of a starship. I don't see where this 'they give it to cadets' assumption comes from.

not to sure how to take some scene clips, as they are usually butchered for the trailer and you cant really make any sense out of them until the movies out.


Interesting though, the lines of dialogue are spliced together from scenes that probably take place all over the movie.

Visuals are stunning and the voiceover from Pike is fabulous, sounds really poingnant, especially the way its edited and the way he talks about Kirks father being he captain of a starship for "All but 12 minutes and saving lives."

Lets hope the movie is better and not the reverse like Indy 4.
