Saw it with Watchmen today. Far better then the previous one, glad they cut out the kid in the car. Really looking forward to it now.

It is the Captain's decision,
Actually that would be Starfleet's decision.

Was it Starfleet's decision when Picard decided to take over an entire fleet in "First Contact?"

In fact, Kirk in this situation is more or less an ACTING Captain. This is how Memory Alpha defines an Acting Captain:

The position of acting captain is bestowed upon an officer or another officer aboard a starship when the ship's regular commanding officer is unable to command for an extended period of time.

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Acting_captain

Memory Alpha goes on to cite examples like Data becoming an acting Captain in the TNG Episode "Night Terrors," and then again in "Gambit Part 1 & 2. Harry Kim took over as acting captain for Voyager during the episode "Course: Oblivion" when all the senior officers "dissolved."

So considering Pike left Kirk as Spock's First Officer, and Spock is off and away somewhere, Kirk feasibly can take over since he is next in line, and the commanding officer is incapacitated.

I've watched it 10 times now... not sure if I'm impressed or not, but it's growing on me, I think...

..bet it works much better on the big screen...

It appears that Spock flies his Timeship into the Narada and goes BOOM!
I think my ass is starting to hurt again....;)

I like the closeups of the Ship... especially the closeup that shows the top of the primary hull from an upside down position...(wondered why the lettering looked funny till I tilted my head)...

...one thing though, from the back the new nacelles look like boxing gloves on really skinny arms...

...another strange view of the ship through a whole bunch of debris... it's like catching sight of a mouse scurrying though some tall grass..

Sulu has got his Stick Shift back...

...also an interesting view from the balcony of Spock's Parents Home.... as things go horribly wrong...

OMG... there's a shot of the ENTERPRISE, looking from behind and above the connecting neck between the nacelles, that looks like it couldda come right out of TWOK... several missiles/torpedo's hitting the Torpedo Launcher area... also very, VERY Cool...

The music throughout the trailer is very reminiscent and has overtones of the female voice from classic Treks opening theme... I hope it's actually from the movie and not just added to the trailer...

[NuScotty] ... I like it ... [/NuScotty]

Are the nacelles blue?

At the resolution (not HD) that I'm viewing, the one shot of the front of the ship goes by sooo fast I can't really tell...sorry...

Looking at the HD Trailer now... None of the shots of the ship show ANY color at the front of the nacelles other than black.

That looks fantastic - a friend of mine has seen it and asked when it's out - and he hates trek.

I suspect it's 'just' trailer-music (Immediate or Two Steps from Hell). But I hope the actual score will be as epic as what we hear in this trailer.

Call me a pathetic little Trekkie, but because of this great music and the epic feel this trailer creates for Star Trek I actually had tears of joy and awe in my eyes the first time I saw it.

Since the movie's already in the can, it's possible this could be from the actual score.

It sounds a lot like Hans Zimmer, but I couldn't find any scores that matched.

Awesome trailer. Watched it about 6 times now.

Also goes very well with the Floyd song Welcome to the Machine and a good belt of Tennesee whiskey ;)

Are you sure Kirk is on the Enterprise as a Cadet? For all we know, some time passes, and he's a Lieutenant, or Lt. Comm.

If Kirk was already an officer of any kind, then why would McCoy have needed to fake an illness in Kirk in order to get him on board the ship?

You'll also notice that Kirk does not wear a normal Starfleet uniform, just a black shirt... isn't black the cadet color in this timeframe?

because kirk may have been restricted from coming aboard for some other reason.
and no i think the black shirt has on is just the black undershirt worn under the officers uniforms.

i still think greenwood's bones looks far older when he speaks the "Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence" line then when we see him and kirk as cadets.

i mean enough time would have to have passed for bones to go through the academy and be assigned to enterprise as the doctor.

so i think kirk here is either a lt or possibly even lt commander who for whatever reason had gone back to academy to be an instructor.

it may be that kirk had a theory about nero and for whatever reason the brass didnt agree and denied kirk permission to go to enterprise.

thanks to bonz for mentioning youtube since i couldnt get the official trailer to upload.

Man I've seen the trailer like 10 times now. Awesome.

Saw it with Watchmen today. Far better then the previous one, glad they cut out the kid in the car. Really looking forward to it now.

I'll second that.

And some starship-porn:

PHWOARRRR!!

After watching this awesome trailer a few times, these thoughts occurred to me:

"But what about the viewscreen reflection issue? And are the corridors the right sort of corridors?"

Because....y'know....priorities and all that. I'll be up all night worrying about it, now. Honest.

*off to watch awesome trailer one more time*

:D

Ok, my 2 cents on the Kirk taking command thing. From what I recall of spoilers from way back, Kirk is denied officer status after cheating on the KOM test. It's entirely possible that Kirk is a Lt. much like Saavik was, but is getting punished by a grouchy old Admiral.

If Pike gives him his rank back, which is probably within his rights during a combat situation, then Kirk is actually in the chain of command. Since he's Kirk the wunder kid and did really well at SFA, and gets his Lt. rank back, he actually would be 3rd in command if Pike ordered it.

Pike and Spock are gone. Sulu and Uhura would then be the same rank as him, but probably didn't take the same advanced command courses Kirk did. McCoy isn't in the chain of command, as per canon. Remember, fricking Leslie got command over McCoy in TOS. Geordi gets command over Troi or Crusher.

So it could make sense.

^ That's the most plausible explanation I read on this subject in this forum. :techman:

Well, if anyone was taking bets to see which poster would go into the new trailer with the intent of hating every second of it and then coming here to bitch first....

Mhmm... let me guess... The Captain that wasn't?

Where's Stalnoivolk when you need him?
Please refrain from taunting other posters.

Please refrain from posting stupid pictures accusing others of trolling.

Hahaha, @Captain X, realism, really?

Warp
Teleporters
Phasers
Large Spaceships
Shields
Time Travel

etc.

Please don't talk about realism in the chain of command anymore. We all know you were dead set against this movie from the beginning, now you're just nitpicking like no other. I feel sorry for you that you won't let yourself enjoy what will undoubtedly be one of Star Trek's finest films.
And I feel sorry that you feel the need to give anyone critical of the movie grief just because they aren't falling all over themselves to watch a movie because of what the title is.

Oh boy, did I hurt your feelings? Resorting to pictures now? What a baby.

If you can suspend your disbelief at a future utopian society governed by a central agency, then you can suspend your disbelief at Starfleet's chain of command.
Again, please refrain from taunting other posters.

Yup, so sayith the great Abrams while qualifying everything he's done for this movie.

I have just as much a right to state my opinions as you do, live with it.

By all means, state your opinions, but please refrain from posting crudely-conceived taunting pictures which only serve to make your already-tantrumlike behavior more obvious.

And it's "saith", btw (if you're looking for the appropriately Bible-English third person singular present tense of the verb "say"; zingers are always much better when you don't sabotage yourself by misspelling them.)

Now everyone behave.
