Have you ever given up on a Trek series? If so, what was the last straw for you?

This. Even my wife has commented more than once that Seven wasn't just there for the sex appeal, she was actually a great addition to the crew. Well written, well performed, with a surprising amount of pathos for such an unemotional character. To this day, the relationship between Seven and the Doctor is my daughter's favorite thing about Voyager.

Focusing on the catsuit definitely buries the lead.

I do understand that. Although I really enjoyed the character arc of Seven (minus the Chakotay nonsense), Voyager never lived up to its full potential. Wasting characters with great potential (Neelix, Kes, Kim) was such a shame, and the stories just became bland.

He seemed like a character they didn't really know what to do with. For that matter, the whole franchise seems generally awkward when it tries to honor the indigenous/First Nations demographic. Ensign Walking Bear was maybe the best effort? That episode was co-written by Russell Bates, a Native American* of the Kiowa tribe, and it won TOS/TAS's only Emmy.

* I always feel compelled to note that a significant number of people this label gets applied to don't particularly like it. Many of them still prefer to be called "Indians," or they just reference their tribal identities. When I need an overall term I tend to use the Canadian "First Nations" when it makes sense, even though I'm from the U.S.

I'll defend Chakotay in the early seasons. He had some good ones centered on him... "STATE OF FLUX", "MANEUVERS", "UNITY", "DISTANT ORIGIN", and "NEMESIS" come to mind. After "NEMESIS", though... he had some really rough episodes, like "UNFORGETTABLE" and "THE FIGHT".

This is just more proof on how Voyager wasted characters. I mean, what if they either went full Mexican heritage with the actor, or simply casted a native American for the part and went full into that? And stuck with it? But nope, another ball dropped.
Because honestly, I think that Robert could have really nailed a properly developed character.

*ETA* @Just a Bill Your way of saying native American is something I will need to consider. I am Dutch, so the entire subject is both foreign to me, but with the way foreign nations are of import to my country, it is also something I want to add to my way of thinking and speaking.

In Chakotay's defense...or at least early portrayals of him with regards to his ethnicity, TPTB hired a consultant who was a fraudster. Whether TPTB knew him to be a fraudster at the time is a bit unclear, but suffice to say the character may have been handled better if they'd had a consultant who'd actually known WTH he was talking about.

DSC(some of the most just unlikable charactors i have ever come across in a ST show), Picard season 1/2,(just bland and boring to be honest), that animated show(just bored again plus not really into animation), and that recent one based at a starfleet school(school angst soap drama i have no interest in at), so up to now since the end of Enterprise tv show, all i have really watched new ST tv show wise is Strange new worlds and Picard S3.

Voyager, although not half as good written like DS9 (which was the climax of Star Trek imo) was the last series i really never thought about not continuing watching.

ENT i just try watching to the end the first time but i am happy they only made 4 seasons fbh... DIS was abmyssal in almost every aspect, the aesthetics, characters, dialogues etc. almost disgusted me.... PIC was rather an science fightion thriller than Star Trek.... SNW maybe the most amusing for me of the new treks.... SFA i didnt even a go

I gave up with lower Decks after about the first season, Just knew it wasn't for me and gave up forcing myself to watch it, similar thing with Prodigy when i realized i was only watching it for Voyager easter eggs.

No straw that broke the camel’s back, but I wasn’t enthralled and perhaps had overdosed on Star Trek at that point. A friend of mine said Voyager got better once Seven of Nine arrived - maybe someday I’ll give it another try.

Yeah definitely don't write Voyager off because of its first few seasons. It doesn't change as radically as TNG perhaps, but you're more likely to get a good episode once you're done with season 3.

That was my experience when I finally started watching the later seasons of VOY on the late night reruns on H&I after giving up on the show in the 90s. I think it helped that I was watching them on a nightly basis instead of week to week, but the stories got better overall and the characters grew on me over time.

And yeah, Seven of Nine definitely helped. She was an interesting character and Jeri Ryan did an amazing job with the part.

In the Netherlands, we got the episodes a few weeks after the USA so I got spoiled on something and again, nothing looked interesting enough for me to really take my time for it.
I am not saying it is a bad show, just nothing about it seemed to be aimed at me as an audience. And that's perfectly fine, there are plenty of shows that are not for me while a lot the things I like are not for others.

But yeah.

The pilot episode has a lot more sci-fi action-adventure in it to grab the audience, it's not entirely representative of the rest of the season.

I don't know if that makes you more likely or less likely to give it a second chance, but I'd say give it a few episodes if you want to be sure of what kind of series it is.

I know I should, and most likely will. Right now I'm really in a massive burn-out I'm not giving in to, And starting news shows really takes a lot. So maybe that's it.

Honestly, it isn't "good", but it isn't as bad as I thought it would be based on the advertising and interviews. Much like a lot of the Kurtzman era, it has some interesting concepts, but fumbles the execution.
