The Cyberpunk genre back then assumed we'd follow the Japanese dominance of the 80s. Unfortunately, their economy crashed, and it's still recovering. Their lack of child births isn't helping.
No. There are probably better dystopias closer to how our potential future will look. None spring to mind at the moment as I've been trying to read generally more upbeat literature lately. Though, I do have Never Let Me Go on my library holds list.

Star Trek is a product of and occasionally commentary on the Culture Wars of the 1960s.
As TNG reflects the Reagan '80s, DS9 and VOY the Clinton '90s and ENT the post-9/11 world.
While not a book, Idiocracy ranks highly for me.
I was born in 1971 and still understood what Star Trek actually was.
I can only honestly say that I enjoy Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds more than large parts of "classic Trek"
In the end I think it's more a matter of "taste" than of "age". You like some stuff, you might not like other stuff.
I don't care for most of DISC (because I never really liked the "mystery box" format it employed, I never was a fan of that type of storytelling) and I despise PIC (probably the only Star Trek show I like even less than ENT).
Never watched Academy, but from what I can gather very few people liked that one, no matter what age bracket.
But I also was never a person who forced themselves to watch a Star Trek show only because it's "Star Trek".
Though I can also understand that sometimes a franchise as a whole develops into a direction someone just might not like. I had that happen with Final Fantasy. But here too it's not that I "aged out" of it, but because the games switched from turn based combat to real time combat and because the games take too damn long to release these days (among other things)

OK, this may be a repeat for me but now at 80, I have seen and enjoyed every nanosecond of small or large screen Star Trek and enjoyed it all.
