Female Characters in the J.J.Verse

For my part, I don't really care what the women do (or what Abrams, Orci & Kurtzman do about them in the next movie)-just give them pants, as I said before.

Great video, SiorX. :rommie: With all the hot guys, I wasn't complaining, but still...

I'm fine with a rewritten Rand. I'd love to see Number One (with a name!!!) and Lt. Colt. For fanwank references, Magivers doesn't seem very interesting - she's just a weak female who betrays her crew because she's in luuuv  - but I wouldn't mind seeing what Dr. Miranda Jones and Marlene Moreau are up to in the Abramsverse - Moreau presumably also eventually betrayed her captain but in a good cause. :bolian:

I forgot about Kirk's mom because she was just in the opening sequences and then never seen again. As someone else said in this thread, a shame she wasn't at the ceremony at the end.

If you want to count random NPC's on the bridge who had one line, go ahead. That's not what I would call a character however.

For characters we had:

Kirk's mom, in the intro, never seen again.
Gaila, might be still alive but also might be quite dead.
Amanda, dead.
Uhura, only fully fledged female character we know will be in ST:XII.

Now sure, Kirk's mom might be in it, no death is stopping this, but it seems highly unlikely. So yeah, we need more female characters. Rand would be great, in rebooted form. More personality than mooning over Kirk.

I wouldnt mind seeing Chapel and Rand in expanded roles. Though with seven regular character I'm not sure how much screentime two more would get unless they were central to plot "gueststars". Otherwise they are supernumeraries with names.

"Thanks for that report Rand"

"Chapel hand me the laser scalpel."

I'd settle for a female in a lead role for the length of the next movie. A villain is fine. It's true that with Sulu, Chekov and Scott already in very minor roles another assistant role is not going to work well. Now personally I wouldn't mind if Chekov and Sulu were relegated to Travis Mayweather status and Rand became a sizable character, though she would have to be given something more than what they did with Uhura, as in "love" is not enough for a personality.

TOS's Kyle, TNG's Rager, VOY's Vorik... They often got barely more than being a two-line walk on, enough to gain them a screen credit, though - plus future episodes, in which they finally got more to do. Every possibility that someone like Hannity would become a fully-blown character in the next movie.

The miniskirts were optional - we saw a few female Enterprise officers in pants throughout the movie (including Madeline, the bronze-skinned, tribal-tattooed, pointy-toothed alien bridge officer who they need to bring back). Plus there were no miniskirts on the Kelvin at all.

You could short or eliminate the screen time of Chekov, Sulu and/or Scotty to "make room" for Rand and Chapel.

Just as Uhura was pulled largely from the back and given more lines, so to with other previously secondary characters could be made more prominate.

Well Sulu, Chekov and Scotty were secondary characters in the film already. So replacing them with Rand and Chapel would exactly put those two on par with Uhura.

Plenty of spare character moments are freed up by not having George & Winona Kirk, Olsen, Keenser, random vulcans or admirals. Each of t supporting cast only needs one 'big' scene (probably two or three for Scotty & McCoy) and the rest of the time they can be milling around in the backround. That' why I favour Rand though - as the yeoman she has a reason to accompany the captain that requires no forced story logic.

And quite frankly, I think putting McGivers in would be fanwank. . .and totally unnecessary. . .hell, they didn't even name her in Wrath of Khan. . .and if they aren't doing that story, why bother?

They didn't name her in the finished film, but in an early edit, Khan has this line which was subsequently deleted:

Khan said:
And I’ll wager he never told you about his shipmate. The beautiful and courageous Lieutenant McGivers. Who gave up everything to join me in exile...out of love. You didn’t expect to find me...

Honestly, I hope we get more prominent female characters in the next film. Star Trek (2009) went a long way towards finally making Uhura a part of significance, but it still replicated the male-dominated command structure of the original series. Hopefully we'll see more women in upper level positions in the sequel--even if they're not big parts on-board the Enterprise. There's no reason, if we see the captain of another ship, that it couldn't be a woman.

What I'd like to see is the proposed female character acting as a counter balance to Uhura's attitude. Since Kirk, Spock, and Uhura were young, angsty, and disagreed with eachother on almost every point possible, it'd be nice to see a character who can actually keep a level head once in a while. Maybe even a humorous "I did something right the first time while you were all bickering over what to do" scene is in order.

Ann Mulhall always struck me as being that sort of character. She didn't have much to do as herself, being possessed and 'girly' for much of the episode but the real Mulhall was a match for Kirk and Spock.

The problem with a character like that is that she'd be boring - perfect characters are boring as hell - and if they didn't do it exactly right, she could easily come off as a prissy bitch with a superior attitude which wouldn't be boring but wouldn't be a character I'd like to see. Another danger: she'd come off as a Mary Sue.

Good rule of thumb: the people you'd like to associate with in RL with are not the people you want to see in movies and vice versa. :rommie:

I would like to see an older woman in a supporting role: an admiral, T'Pau, or a scientist as a counter-balance to Pike and the young cast.
