So, ST:XI had 3 female characters with speaking parts and they killed off two of them. Now all we have left is Uhura.
Much as I love her, Rand is WAY too dumb to be a captain!
If you want to count random NPC's on the bridge who had one line, go ahead. That's not what I would call a character however.
For my part, I don't really care what the women do (or what Abrams, Orci & Kurtzman do about them in the next movie)-just give them pants, as I said before.
You could short or eliminate the screen time of Chekov, Sulu and/or Scotty to "make room" for Rand and Chapel.with seven regular character I'm not sure how much screentime two more would get
Well Sulu, Chekov and Scotty were secondary characters in the film already. So replacing them with Rand and Chapel would exactly put those two on par with Uhura. You could short or eliminate the screen time of Chekov, Sulu and/or Scotty to "make room" for Rand and Chapel.with seven regular character I'm not sure how much screentime two more would get
Just as Uhura was pulled largely from the back and given more lines, so to with other previously secondary characters could be made more prominate.

And quite frankly, I think putting McGivers in would be fanwank. . .and totally unnecessary. . .hell, they didn't even name her in Wrath of Khan. . .and if they aren't doing that story, why bother?
Khan said:And I’ll wager he never told you about his shipmate. The beautiful and courageous Lieutenant McGivers. Who gave up everything to join me in exile...out of love. You didn’t expect to find me...
What I'd like to see is the proposed female character acting as a counter balance to Uhura's attitude. Since Kirk, Spock, and Uhura were young, angsty, and disagreed with eachother on almost every point possible, it'd be nice to see a character who can actually keep a level head once in a while. Maybe even a humorous "I did something right the first time while you were all bickering over what to do" scene is in order.

Plus there were no miniskirts on the Kelvin at all.
