I'm voting for Troi, because she epitomised what I like about TNG. The new shows are all angsty and kind of dark, angry, full of violence and misery and depressing - my opinion, not a fact! Some say TNG was boring because everyone is professional and nice. And part of that is beacuse they were the only crew to have a competent mental health professional on the bridge. She also plays a pivotal role in Diplomatic missions like in "The Survivors".
And Troi grew as the show progressed. Sure, at the beginning, she's treated a bit too much as eye candy and isn't given enough to do. But by the end of the show, she's become a commander. We see her grow from someone totally out of her depth in "Disaster" to making the tough calls in later episodes like "Face of the Enemy" and "Thine Own Self". She has drive and ambition and we see that throughout the series. She's logical and empathetic and has great scenes like when she talks Worf down from killing himself in "Night Terrors" - a scene that's far more powerful and impactful than pew pew space battles or the angst ridden crying on the modern shows - my opinion, not a fact!
Then there's her relationship with Riker and we see love and loss and how their relationship changes over the series. But always and forever, Troi's nice, she's sympathetic and freinds with everyone. Female characters don’t always have to be angry, physically strong, and “Kick-ass.” Though we all love Kira, Janeway and 7 for that. Troi as a character is more realistic, it’s nice to see a compassionate, warm, touchy-feely, chocolate-loving woman boldly going. She's the heart of TNG.
