Exclusive Clip

People very much wanted to see an Enterprise with Seven in the captain's chair.
People wanted a TNG reunion show. The reception to a Captain Seven show would have been very tepid had every episode not featuring some returning face.

Anyhoo back to Academy and the Athena. There is an exchange in the trailer "that thing is going to take us to the school?" "That thing is the school" so an interpretation that Athena is the entire academy is not without merit. Only a few weeks until we know for certain.

Not true at all. Seve, Rafi, Sidney and Jack would have been all that was needed. No TNG characters except for maybe an occasional guest spot once every couple seasons. Doesn't matter the show will never get made. Too much time has passed and the actors have all moved on and Jeri Ryan is getting a bit too old at this point.

So I watched the clip. Productions values are good. Which there is no excuse in this day and age that they would not be. But I don't understand that after 1000 years of advancement they still have people falling out of chairs without any restraints AND why are they running to safe zones? There is zero reason for this now when they can just instantly transport. 😂

I guess school must mean something like classroom building to Kurtzman and Ake. Not a definition I'm familiar with. I'm a current undergraduate, and I know of school being a subdivision of a university (like my college's Liberal Arts school), but I generally think of the term referring to the full institution. Shrug.

New to drama?

Seatbelts are not a new invention. They even had them in the 60s when TOS was around. Yet, the second pilot had people flug about. It's a feature at this point.

Jack is a terrible Mary Sue type character. Please no.

Of course they are not new and I understand the drama. So no seatbelts...Great. That one I was kinda being silly about.

That doesn't explain why they are not transporting away from danger. Everyone has a personal transporter. Zero reason to be running from danger to safe areas. They should have left personal transporters in development hell. Having them takes away any drama even if they ignore them because they people like me will say ..Why didn't they sue their personal transporters???.... 😂

In the future they abolished tort laws.

And transporters have removed drama for the past 55 years. Why start now?

Not really. They are more efficient now removing any need to transport 6 at a time. No one should have been running from danger in that scene. Everyone should have been safe.

I'm glad that we have the Starfleet safety experts here to lecture us on safety.

I figure the transporter is like the elevator: you don't use it in the event of fire.
Not to mention that they were at red alert and diverting that much power to the transporters probably wouldn't be a great tactical move. As for the cadets not having personal transporters, I mark that down to them being cadets. The doors in Wesley's dorms had doorknobs.

And sometimes things just have to happen for the story to take place. How many contrivances have they come up with over the years to make transporters unviable for any given situation?

Maybe the transporters were being jammed/scrambled?

It is a thing in setting after all and why the idea of separating parts of your ship by empty space is utterly stupid.

How would people exercise and do activities if the ship were small?? Use their personal transporters to transport to other dimensions?

Not buying it. It's 900 years later and they are putting their cadets at risk by not providing them with a cheap personal transporter??? That is ridiculous. Rubbish.... 😂

In that scene, Nahla orders Lura to beam to the part of the ship where the cadets are to get them up the stairs to safety. So transporters were being used during the attack.
