Discovery ending with Season 5

Nilsson, Bryce, Rhys, Detmer etc. still feel underdeveloped for example yet new main characters like Book kept getting added in.

This has always been one of my bigger complaints about the show. We really never got to explore the bridge like we are used to. The bridge isnt home. Overtime I accepted that they wanted to write a different take on it (hell it took 4 years before Burnham became captain.)

The show felt like it had finally grown its beard. Sucks we wont get to see it settle in.

We barely even know the bridge crew. No one cares about them. We learned more sbout Sidney LaForge in one minute of dialogue then we ever did about the bridge crew of the discovery in 4 years. Well they did cry alot. Lol

Last I checked Burnham, Saru, and Tilly were bridge officers. We know things about them. Adira is a bridge officer. We know stuff about them. Detmer had a story arc in the third season.

You just don't like them. You don't even know why you don't like them. All you know is "STD bad!"

We barely know anything about the helm officers. Less than even checking and sulu
We know nothing of the other regular bridge officers sitting at the science stations and communications area. Yeah I dint like STD because of the poor writing. Glad to finally see it go.

If you really think about it what did you know about Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov? It's easy to say they're important because they were along for the movies and have matured into legacy characters, but, honestly when you compare TOS with Discovery, both shows treated their secondary bridge members almost exactly the same.

This is actually why I think adding Uhura to Strange New Worlds was a stroke of genius. At the end of the day, there really wasn't much known about Uhura and I'm quite pleased the series has decided to take the opportunity to explore her character.

They're going to keep Legacy Characters going as long as the TNG, DS9, and VOY casts are alive and still able to act. Plus they've uncorked the bottle and won't put the genie back in. After two decades of prequels and reboots, they won't cut themselves off from that backlog of characters and stories again.
Um, except even the President of Paramount has said Strange New Worlds was really driving new subscriptions on the Star Trek side of things - (and Yellowstone is their MAJOR driving subscriber piece of streaming content overall.)

Paramount+ has already launched in Europe with SNW; and they plan to expand to the Asian market, SO...

If they're smart, (and she still says she wants to do Star Trek); and they can make the schedule and salary work, their best bet would be:

Section 31 - Starring Michelle Yeoh.

(Hell, that may even have figured into the decision to end Discovery at Season 5 too.)

I doubt they'll do more than two Live Action Star Trek series at a time going forward, and may cut the animated series down to one - ST: Prodigy because it has more family and younger viewer appeal.

Lower Decks is probably next on their chopping block after it finishes production of the season they're working on now.

But I guess we'll see over the next year just what survives and what doesn't.

I'm not knocking Strange New Worlds. I'm just saying why I don't think they'll stop having Legacy Characters.

In a recent post, I even said I thought SNW was the future of Star Trek on TV.

PIC Season 3 is a last hurrah for the TNG crew. Nothing more. DSC, whatever you think of it, is going into its fifth season. It's an older show now. The future of Star Trek on TV is Strange New Worlds. Not Picard.
I should clarify to say I meant I think PIC Season 3 is the last hurrah for the entire TNG crew together.

Then that's my bad. I read that as 'Legacy Actors' - which is on me.

But yeah, if Alex Kurtzman is getting any direction from above it's most likely:

Michelle Yeoh is 'hot' right now - get that Star Trek idea she and you had GOING ASAP if at all possible...

I'm not sad because I don't give a hoot about most of the characters. And the ones I do like, Lorca, Georgiou and Saru, they either killed, dropped or sidelined.

I'm not disappointed or surprised. I felt very let down by seasons 3 & 4. Shame for fans though.

Section 31 - Starring Michelle Yeoh.

For four years, we've known NOTHING about S31 other than Michelle wants to do it.

We don't know the direction the show is going to take (Is it going to be the upright professional S31 of the Berman era? Or is it going to be Disco's dark, skulking S31?)

Knowing now that DSC is ending after the fifth season, I'm glad they haven't fully fleshed out the landscape of the 32nd Century. First of all, with only 36 episodes from the third season to the fifth, it would've been impossible for the 32nd Century to become as developed as the 24th/25th Century anyway. It was just never going to happen, no matter what Michelle Paradise would've done. And now, if her or someone else ever decides to do a series in the 32nd Century at some point, there's enough of it that hasn't been filled in, that whoever this hypothetical creative team would be could do almost anything they want with the bare bones template that's been laid out.

So do we think they'll add episodes then to give the series a proper ending or do you think they'll stick with the original 10? Honestly I think they should do a movie length episode (90 minutes) and either air it as one full-length episode or they can split it up into two. (If you combined both parts of Such Sweet Sorrow It added up to almost 1 hour and 45 minutes so it's do able).

"Guardians of the Galaxy meets Mission Impossible" if I recall correctly from some interview or other.

Kurtzman has stated before that the plan was S31 after Discovery finishes. Michelle Yeoh is huge right now, so it's a big opportunity to have a big star on a flagship show. Hopefully P+ budget cuts won't kill it.

I'm not surprised and I am surprised.

I remember there being a poll in 2017 about how long one thought Discovery would last. I filled in 5 or 6 seasons.

So that the show is ending now is not a surprise for me.

On the other hand, when production on season 5 started and finished and it was not announced as being the last season, I thought they would at least get a season 6 to possibly wrap things up.

TBTB obviously didn't know season 5 would be its last, so I'm guessing the Paramount/Showtime merger threw a spanner in the works quite recently.

Discovery has never been my favourite Star Trek show, but I liked it. I just hope this isn't the beginning of the end for Star Trek on TV/streaming like it was in 2005.

Hopefully with Picard and Discovery ending, there is now room for 1 or 2 new live action shows. I hope it's going to be a Picard spin-off, rather than a Section31 or Academy show. We'll see...

I say they just do a television movie of it and have streamed on P+

We can hope. I rather fear that, in light of the recent headlines that streaming services can no longer afford to function at a loss, we’ll see a marked reduction in content. I suspect they’ll probably consolidate SNW as that seems to have been the breakout Trek show, at least among fans and critics, I’m not sure whether it’s appealing to non-Trek fans? I don’t think Lower Decks will be long for this world and I suspect Prodigy’s fate will revolve around how much of a splash it’s made on Nickelodeon (not sure if we have metrics?). Times are a’ hanging. But I would like to be wrong.

It was probably inevitably they decided to wrap up DSC. An established show gets more expensive to produce with each year, and usually it’s harder to attract new viewers, so there’s likely been a drop off with each year.

I’m glad I’m not a YouTuber, I imagine there’s a fair bit of gloating today with all the freaking rabid DSC haters, Dumbcock and his ilk. They were right all along! Discovery is cancelled! (Just 6 years later than they initially claimed)

I predict greatness for season 5.

Im giving it an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Pappy right now...

But seriously, P+ is doing right by them. If they film it, people will come.
