Do we even know if he's a regular/recurring/bit part character yet?maybe he's more someone who Burnham talks to remotely, or who becomes involved following the events of the pilot

If there was one bit of the trailer I didn't like, it was that. What a weirdly specific and melodramatic 'power'. Seems a bit Deanna Troi.
My guess is something along the lines of that TNG episode with the sleeper ship of Klingons who don't know the war is over. They find a Klingon archive, or generational ship, or something similar, a Botany Bay of Qo'nos, and wake them up, sparking some form of chaos.I'm already trying to piece together the premise of the show from the trailers
Wow, hard to believe you can determine that from a two-minute trailer.… clear miscasting, and a poor script …
I know him mostly from The Tudors, which he was great in, and playing a character closer in temperament to Sarek. I think he'll do well in the role. The implication I'm getting is that he isn't on board ship at least initially, so maybe he's more someone who Burnham talks to remotely, or who becomes involved following the events of the pilot.
Well, if you take a look at a still of the ship when it appears in the promo - it does appear to have an NX-01 style gold deflector dish. The Shenzou looks neat. Looks like a much older ship with how her hull plating is colored, the undermounted bridge module, big oberservation window/screen, and to be honest she looks kinda small. Throwback to ENT style ships?

I'm guessing so far it's only people who've been specifically looking out for it (ie, invested Trek fans) dissecting it so far. It'd be interesting to see what a more general audience will think as time goes on.Trailer's already getting a very mixed reception online.
Gates McFadden's acting was terrible for 6 seasons of TNG. That's majority opinion around these parts. I know terrible acting when I see it, and that Sonequa Martin Green doesn't seem to be able to act her way out of a paper bag, and as with McFadden, I don't expect her acting to get any better, not that I expect her to have anything like the same amount of time to improve that McFadden had. Discovery is unlikely to last long. Trailer's already getting a very mixed reception online.
