If there was one bit of the trailer I didn't like, it was that. What a weirdly specific and melodramatic 'power'. Seems a bit Deanna Troi.

Picard and Data talk about the word "snoop" when:
TroI: Captain, I'm sensing a powerful mind.
(Collision alert sounds)

Whatever it takes to generate drama...

I'm getting Voyager vibes from the fact that we're seeing things that are totally new to the Star Trek universe, and a DS9 vibe from the fact that there's already a clear narrative arc being established even in the trailer.

I'm already trying to piece together the premise of the show from the trailers
My guess is something along the lines of that TNG episode with the sleeper ship of Klingons who don't know the war is over. They find a Klingon archive, or generational ship, or something similar, a Botany Bay of Qo'nos, and wake them up, sparking some form of chaos.

James Frain was my favorite casting news so far because of his work in Orphan Black. One series is ending, and another will start and I will still get a James Frain fix. He's an awesomely cool bad guy.

Kind of eh on the aesthetics (didn't have to be TOS esque, but a little more difference from the Kelvinverse would be nice) and I'm not overtly fond of being reminded of the Remans every time I see the Klingons, but the rest looked good. I'm intrigued by the conflict between the Captain and XO; its a dynamic that's typically produced enjoyable scenes on Trek (Enterprise notwithstanding).

Definitely curious to see how the engineered alien officer is like, especially given the Federation's stance on DNA re-sequencing.

I know him mostly from The Tudors, which he was great in, and playing a character closer in temperament to Sarek. I think he'll do well in the role. The implication I'm getting is that he isn't on board ship at least initially, so maybe he's more someone who Burnham talks to remotely, or who becomes involved following the events of the pilot.

Well, he certainly seems like a perfectly acceptable Vulcan for the 20 seconds we saw of him. LOL

Discovery sure looks like NuTrek. Not 2250s NuTrek but 2230s NuTrek. And that's amazing. The Kelvin segments always were my favorite parts from the Reboots. I loved that retrofuturistic vibe and it seemed to fit perfectly into the Prime Timeline tbh. DSC seems to nail those looks very well. I'm hyped.

The Shenzou looks neat. Looks like a much older ship with how her hull plating is colored, the undermounted bridge module, big oberservation window/screen, and to be honest she looks kinda small. Throwback to ENT style ships?
Well, if you take a look at a still of the ship when it appears in the promo - it does appear to have an NX-01 style gold deflector dish.

Wow, hard to believe you can determine that from a two-minute trailer.

Gates McFadden's acting was terrible for 6 seasons of TNG. That's majority opinion around these parts. I know terrible acting when I see it, and that Sonequa Martin Green doesn't seem to be able to act her way out of a paper bag, and as with McFadden, I don't expect her acting to get any better, not that I expect her to have anything like the same amount of time to improve that McFadden had. Discovery is unlikely to last long. Trailer's already getting a very mixed reception online.

I'm guessing so far it's only people who've been specifically looking out for it (ie, invested Trek fans) dissecting it so far. It'd be interesting to see what a more general audience will think as time goes on.

1st Officer: Captain, recommend disengaging.

Captain: Disengage

Wow,any concerns I had are gone. I love the look of it, it might be similar to the movies, but I think that's probably just because they're both taking a modern approach to the Trek aesthetic and there's not a lot of ways you can do that without losing it's Trekness.
I'm wondering if we're seeing two different types of Klingons, the one with darker skin looks more human than the others. Could he be a modern Klingon, while the others are ancient Klingons? Or maybe he's a Klingon and the others are some kind of new servant race?
The stuff with Sarek is a surprise. From the flashbacks it looks like he (and Amanda, I would assume) raised Burnham. I wonder what her relationship with Spock is?
I like the holographic communicator. I know that's more of a Star Wars thing, but something like that is a lot more interesting than the characters just staring at the screen.
The uniforms are cool, I'm trying to work out the colors of the bands and sides. It looks like Silver might be sciences and gold is command? I'm assuming there must be another one in there somewhere for engineering and security.

No it isn't. Stop making silly shit up.

Trailer's already getting a very mixed reception online.

Mixed reception =

50% - "Wow, that trailer looks awesome! Production values are fantastic! Looks like the Abrams films for TV! Yay!"

50% - "Hey, I thought they said this was supposed to take place ten years before TOS. It doesn't look anything like TOS! It looks more like those horrible, horrible Abrams films that raped my childhood! F$%k those lying f$#kers!!!"

Good thing nobody cares about what people say online.
