Spoilers Canon, Continuity, and Pike's Accident

When you recast and change the character's race, it's usually a signal that you're in a different continuity.

Except April's only appearance was in an animated show which got colors (among other things) wrong. I am more likely to take April's appearance in TAS as incorrect than go "different continuity."

And even if it is a different continuity is there a reason why that should depreciate my enjoyment? :wtf:

This thread is called 'Canon, continuity, and Pike's accident'. What kind of discussions did you think you would find on here?
Omg, Star Trek fans are debating continuity like they have for decades! Clearly people didn't get the memo that with the coming of Kurtzman Trek, people should just shut up and give blanket immunity to anything they do, no matter how canonically dubious!

Even JJ Abrams at the height of his arrogance towards the franchise knew and appreciated not to cross the line of overwriting the pre-existing continuity. People took serious issue with ENT back in the day having fudged when exactly certain technologies were established or why there was no NX-01 model on the Enterprise-D or E.

Now you have an episode that ostensibly wipes out TOS, the TOS films, plus all the visual tie ins between TOS or TOS films with TNG / DS9 / VGR / ENT... Some pushback might be expected!

Where was the pushback for TNG and TMP and TWOK?

At least fans can be consistent. Haven't seen that in a while.

Shut up and give blanket immunity to all past shows pre Kurtzman, save for Abrams because he's a heretic and hates Trek! :scream::sigh::weep:

Well, no that's not the intent. The question is why is April's race a matter of question? Why does it require head canon workaround when we have recastings all the time.
Uhura and Sulu will never be of a different ethnicity. (And yes, I realize that "Japanese" and "Korean" are not considered the "same" to everyone.)

I think it's dishonest for the big show of "Heeeeeey, they're just made up people! They're fictional characters!" when if casting had gone another way it could be a big deal.

It matters. We can argue if it's good or bad I suppose. (April fan here, no matter how they cast him.) But obviously it matters.

Since apparently some are still trying to make this about race, as an Asian guy I'm just going to say it--they called Andre Kim's character Kyle instead of Sulu so that they could just leave him in the transporter room and not give him the episodes and development that Sulu deserves. It's the literal definition of token. No wonder Andre left, I'd have done the same if I were an actor.
Is this based on anything or just speculation? The Sulu thing I mean.

Myself I was more annoyed at ANOTHER TOS character also predating Kirk. If nothing else giving him the name "Kyle" drew more attention to the role rather than him just being the latest transporter guy.

Hey, how come an Asian character on the Enterprise can only be Sulu?!?

Where was the pushback for TNG
Are you serious? Or were you just not around in 1987?

Paging @1001001...

It's being made a big deal either way. It's being argued as a completely different timeline to the point that it is interfering with actual enjoyment of the episodes!

Did people like the episode with April or Kyle? I have no fucking idea because we're debating continuity like it's the second coming of Christ! I've had religious discussions that were less contentious. :wtf:

Why?

And why is the default response now "It must be another timeline?" I don't recall this debate with Saavik, or various other recastings. If it was an issue then I guess I missed it with all the teasing for being a TOS fan, not a TNG fan...

I was 3.

They could've made a brand new Asian character. Admittedly calling him Sulu gives him a higher probability for screentime and development, but I'd be fine with a new Asian male character who gets screen time on par with Ortegas at least. We do have Jenna Mitchell but Asian males are still vastly underrepresented in Hollywood media, as a lot of the publicity leading up to Shang-Chi showed

Seriously? You might want to talk to Andre Kim before ascribing motivations to him. Coming close to resembling those times you’ve described Horak as being fired.

Back in the olden days we just went with it (the two Darrins on Bewitched frex). I mean, we didn't stop watching the show, or spend a lot of time worrying about it. Oh this guy is Darrin now. Okay. Samantha doesn't seem to care so why should we?
Thinking about this more I'm adding that in the sixties and early seventies (my formative tv watching years) certain actors appeared on many different shows in many different roles. One week a cowboy and the next a murderer. We were used to seeing it. The suspension of disbelief was hard-wired into the viewing audience.

In that case we told ourselves "she did magic" to explain why Darrin suddenly turned into a black guy. In Star Trek you gotta go with "Romulans did it" or something.

April being Black and younger here, makes sense. If the Eugenics War was pushed by 50 years, entire human families and lineages would be altered.
