Game The Most Disliked Second Season Episode, 2025 Edition

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

It's a framework to say positive things about episodes from across the franchise.

THE RULES: Below is a list of 2nd season episodes from every Trek show so far -- TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DIS, ST, PIC, LD, SNW, and PRO.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best' of what currently remains.
Post something you enjoy about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to enjoy about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad."

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns.

Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

What a monster list! (not the longest we've ever played, though)

There are so many I could start with, but I'll go with the ingenious "Subspace Rhapsody." This is a top episode of all Trek for me. It brilliantly brings all the emotional arc's of the season to a crescendo. I've rewatched it a billion times, possibly more than any other episode of modern Trek. (I've also watched "No Small Parts", "wej Duj", and "First First Contact" into the ground, I don't know which of those four actually comes out on top)

So many bestestests... but my first bestest that's bestestedly bestium is:

TNG: "Elementary, Dear Data"

I love this one. Great use of the holodeck, great mystery to explore - and how Geordi was inadvertently the cause, great acting, the ball gets rolling for the Dr Pulaski arc where she eventually likes and becomes impressed by Data (but that's another story or two).

Every element comes together marvelously in this one, especially challenging viewers along with Pulaski to show that Data can, indeed, reason, despite being an artificial construct complete with easy-to-access and fully functional on/off switch that you never seem to get with those pesky meatbags or other nicknames that Bender the Robot calls us all on Futurama.

Which oddly and tangentially reminds: Dr Pulaski indeed was just that - not a person to hate, a person to relate to regarding the idea that a machine could act or be relatable like biological organisms. Plus, if she's put to the aside as a "McCoy clone", don't tell a certain EMH - the one who actually parrots McCoy's catchphrases and couldn't get any clonier than that. IMHO, YMMV, EIEIO, ETC. That said, did the arc really work? Not as easily for some and not for all for others, that remains incontrovertible. Dr Crusher was more relatable and easier to roll with in other ways, so to then alienate fans by having her be the anti-robot character could have been more rewarding in the end. That said, I always liked Pulaski and TNG always needed a character who wasn't "part of the clique". But if Pulaski stayed, we'd never get Ro and we'd likely not have Barclay as well.

Data is spot-on.

Geordi is great as a foil for both Data and the plotting's perfect, perfunct, and perfectly perfunctory progression.

There's a mix of subtle wit and intrigue. And danger as the episode goes on.

Even the explanation of the holodeck and "where the walls are" gets a nice reprieve.

Daniel Davis just steals the show as Moriarty. Shame his season 6 return was kept so myopic in scope as his onscreen chemistry opposite Dr Pulaski is no less marvelous.

Did not know of how much money was used to build the one-off London town set. Nice. Surprising, but nice.

IMHO, early TNG is often lumped into a single rating and that's simply tragic as there's a lot to adore in their second season, and - for me - many TNG2 outweigh even a lot of TOS2, never mind the rest. Considering how strong TOS2 was at times, TNG2 is a genuinely impressive feat. It deserved far better treatment.

One of my two absolute favorites of TOS, it's got everything... great tension, drama, action, and excellent guest star with William Windom.

This is always a rewatch when it appears on tv.

A few choice lines of dialogue can't damper what's a rather complex situation woven with an interesting idea or two:

A possible influence for not just "The Loss" but also for the TV series "Herman's Head" (for which only season 1 is good as later seasons dull it down into blandness but that's not important right now), there's a neat concept in this - executed fairly well overall - about needing a mediator who himself has a novel way of communicating, who then loses it when one of the delegates' fellows promptly zaps them in late-80s gooey horror that nobody was expecting to see at the time, oddly. True, one of the Chorus is reduced to a horndog via dialogue since that always helps every negotiation that doesn't end up in a motel somewhere, but as "The Best of Both Worlds" has Admiral Hansen admitting he's having fantasies (seriously, it's pronounced), this episode gets a free pass as a result.

Im saving wej Duj what a great fun ride it was. All the glimpses into the lower decks of the respective ships was wonderful. Ma'ah and T'Lyn introductions. And the longer the Borg drones during the credits just stood there doing nothing in their alcoves the funnier it got.

I adore this one. Yeah, like TOS's "Court Martial" the crux to the issue is obvious (TOS = "someone fiddled with log" and TNG = "Have you rebooted the damn thing yet?") but it's the mystery and journey, and the improbable set of events that can cause a warp core breach that would later become a plot crutch as one little tap on a nacelle and BOOM THERE IT IS... but long before it was a trope, it tried to intelligently set up a means in which you can't cheaply reuse it. Okay, only 10 episodes threatened the audience with it, and there were twice as many ways they could still separate the saucer without ditching the drama, but still.

Plus, it's the first solid Romulan story and I adore how TNG made the Romulans so decidedly iconic and it's this story that hints at the "game of chess with them" trope as well. And they only improve by leaps and bounds since.

The idea of an alien machine reprogramming isn't new (TMP, Changeling), but it feels fresh - and without the epic scale that managed to work in TMP but flopped in Changeling, but that's so much the better. Plus, it shows how the Galaxy class has other ships under its design to help sell the scale of the fleet. A shame they changed the registry number of the ship but, shhh, don't tell anyone else that. And for all we know, it got a new number as to honor someone else, we may never know (or care). Fact remains, this is another lovely season 2 outing, with mystery and showing how space is a dangerous place, and sells it really well.

Even the resolution is tight; ensuring the Ikonian technology is un-get-at-able by forcing a total wipe of every system. It's brilliant.

I have two immediate saves for TNG season 2, but I'll go first with the one that my wife and I truly love.

"Where Silence Has Lease"... this was a great horror episode. Surprisingly well paced, especially considering 3/4 of the entire episode is just on the bridge. It was the start of Winrich Kolbe's long list of directing credits for the franchise. (50 episodes in total, second only to David Livingston with 62. Also one if only 6 people to direct ALL Berman era shows.)

Tension was great, it was very creepy... and Haskell's death is haunting.

One of my favorites of TNG, and more proof that they did horror better than any other series in the franchise.

Forget about subatomic bacteria, those exchange programs could be really cool. Ask Kelly Bundy about the student her father Al took in later, but for now, let's follow up on the humie that the Klingons took in:

TNG: "A Matter Of Honor"

Another excursion into the Klingons where, as with "Heart of Glory", we get some exploration and insight - but without any diluting or demystification, this is also a must-see escapade of early TNG.

I couldn't find the clip of Ensign Mendon forgetting that, when in the other ship, learn their procedures and why they do it, but that's one of the fun themes of the story. One that Riker is quite cognizant of when he joins the Klingon vessel P'ah.

But given how similar they are in some ways, couldn't you just imagine a spinoff of TNG, where Ensign Mendon and Ensign Crusher are at Starfleet Academy in madcap misadventures? It could be called "MC Ensigns" and they'd turn to the camera to talk down at the viewer with the lesson of the week, including a song! Well, maybe not...

This episode spun me round and round, like a record...

TNG: "Time Squared"

I'm a sucker for high concept plots, and the time travel mystery makes this one a nifty curate's egg. I call it that only because of the mystery behind the spatial anomaly being kept vague, open to so much interpretation that a little exposition wouldn't be amiss. And yet, that's seemingly the point: It has a fixation for Picard, came out of nowhere, fetches the Enterprise, one of Picard's actions caused the ship to be destroyed and is thrown back in time to do it all over again. And here we are.

What if it's a wormhole to another region of space, and what lays there in wait? Is it related to the energy fritters from "Lonely Among Us"? What if it's another Q pulling a nasty trick while shielding his presence? Or what if it's the galaxy's way of creating omelets? Nope, no answers, just wild speculation. Is it really just "a tornado in space that's not unlike our tractor beam?" Sometimes a whirl is just a cake. Or is it a cake is just a whirl? Well, throw in enough gone-off ingredients and it'll be a few whirls followed by a few swirls of the toidy when you get done with all the upchucking and/or whatever else. See kids, this is why you do not want the audience to think. Spoonfeed them enough so they go to the toidy.

If nothing else, the real crux of the episode is seeing Picard of all people second-guess himself. And that's got to be the most unnerving element.
