Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

I've been wondering if Melinda May's moniker of "The Cavalry" is less of an informal nickname she picked up and more of an official code-name ala "Black Widow", "Hawkeye", "Mockingbird", ect;? Not that it would an important distinction story-wise, but it would speak to May's skills and her position in S.H.I.E.L.D. before whatever "damaged" her.

I'm assuming the Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. character rights are the same as for the films (so no use of mutants or Spider-Man on television).

Part of me would love to see Hugh Jackman or Andrew Garfield make a brief walk-on appearance on the show without their characters being named or otherwise identifiable.

Well, last week's episode established that psi powers are believed to be impossible at this point in the MCU (though how they explain Loki's mind control is unclear), which seems to imply that they're keeping their distance from the X-Men characters, since those include a number of telepaths and telekinetics.

But it's silly for them to say psi powers are impossible in a world with Norse gods, portals with aliens flying through them, and devices with limitless energy the size of your fist. Psi powers don't necessarily have to come from the X-Gene/mutants.

The scientific studies that they cited likely didn't include a lot of Asgardian subjects....

That's not silly at all. After all, those are different types of phenomena. Just because a new discovery is made, that doesn't mean you assume everything is equally possible. You take it case by case. Sure, it means being open to new possibilities, acknowledging that there are likely to be more things we don't know yet, but it's still a bad idea to believe things in the absence of hard evidence.

Psi powers don't necessarily have to come from the X-Gene/mutants.

I never said they did. What I meant was that, if this were a world where Charles Xavier and Jean Grey and Emma Frost existed, then SHIELD would know that telepathy was real. But since they don't believe telepathy is real, that suggests that those characters don't exist in the MCU, at least not in the form seen in the X-Men movies. (And this idea didn't originate with me. It's from the Wired easter-egg article that was linked to yesterday in post #1002.)

By the same token, being brainwashed by a tesseract-powered alien scepter isn't the same thing as humans having the ability to read minds.

Did they come out and say it was impossible? Because I never got that impression at all. It did appear though, that they've never come across Psi powers before.

I just watched the scene again.

Melinda says "There are no credible studies that support precognition, telepathy or extrasensory perception."

Well, we already knew that mutants aren't in the MCU since that's an X-Men thing and the X-Men aren't part of the MCU.

There's still Inhumans, Mutates, subteranians, Eternals, Deviants, Atlanteans, lemurians, weirdoes in the Savage Land, Vampires, the French, Sorcerers and scraping the bottom of the barrel those Cat People who gave Tigra her powers.

I've now reached the point where I'm so uninvolved with both the plots and characters I'd have bailed if this wasn't part of the MCU.
Ditto.

No, wait... I have bailed. :alienblush:
I bailed on the Marvel Universe in the middle of Civil War (after having been a reader since the mid 60s), but this show is great.

You lasted longer than me. I bailed around the whole Spider-Man clone saga and the X-Men Onslaught story. I've only recently started reading Spider-Man again.

Of course when I bailed there were certain financial reasons as well. Who knows, If I'd had the means I may never have stopped reading, although I really did dislike the clone saga and onslaught stories.

Alternatively, whatever info on telepaths that MCU-'verse SHIELD knows of may have been classified at a higher security clearance than Coulson and company currently have in hand.

Remember that little aside between Sitwell and Coulson in "The Consultant"?

Coulson: What's your clearance level?

Sitwell: You're funny. (beat) Level six, same as you. (beat) Come on, there's a level seven?

Unfortunately, I haven't seen "The Consultant," since it's not legally available online. One of these days I should really buy the DVDs or Blu-Rays.

You are in a unique position where you don't want to be a hypocrite, but it's 2 minutes long and on youtube. There are really illegal places, and then there's youtube.

Meanwhile we all have a buddy who buys too many dvds.

"Borrowing" is a really cheap loophole.

Just ring Brian and get it over with.
