Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

Anyone here bothered that Melinda May's surname is spelled "May" and not "Mei"? Granted we've never received any background on her family and no one is required to spell a name a certain way, but among all the nonstandard spellings of Asian names I've ever encountered, I've never seen "May" for "Mei" (supposing that Melinda May is an American of Chinese descent like Ming-Na Wen)

That's assuming "Melinda May" is even her real name. ;)

So I watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier last night. I know it isn't out in America yet so this probably won't get discussed properly until then but...

How the hell is the show going to continue? Will the team just be a rogue group of people, will they be part of the "new SHIELD? (I'm assuming that there will be a new organisation put into place.)

Tell me about it. Just saw the movie (which is great by the way),
There is no way in hell, the show can shrug off the events of the movie. it's a total game changer!

I believe, though, that foreigners adopting Chinese babies en masse didn't start until the one-child policy came around in 1979.

But there were plenty of Chinese-Americans in this country long before that, some of whom must have put their kids up for adoption. The point is that there are many ways that someone of Chinese ethnicity could have a non-Chinese surname, or at least one not spelled in a conventional way.

Or, much more likely, it's not even her real name.

You know, like James Bond.

Popular internet theories aside, James Bond's real name is James Bond according to Ian Fleming, as reinforced onscreen in Skyfall.

It may be a generational thing, in Agent May's and my generation anglicizing names was more a norm then an exception. I even had a girlfriend who was a Vietnamese boat person and when she left a Hong Kong refugee camp for America her family were all assigned American first names as was copied in the movie and TV series Alien Nation a decade later.

First generation Asian Kids I went to School with thought white kids were too stupid to pronounce their real names.

Just wrote to the movie thread that one way to continue would be for the team to start rooting out the bad guys on the organization. And since this is now partly a Whedon universe, it would be similar to how in start of season 5 of Angel good guys given control of the evil law firm where some people working there were extremely evil.

And I think that there will be a new SHIELD. Probably Maria Hill in charge, if they dont skip straight to Stark. Maria Hill probably since she might be easier to get guest starring on the show.

So are secrets of Coulson's revival and Skye's origin now public domain? Could MODOK or someone controlling him have been clairvoyant? Probably not since that storyline would have ended now without any input from the Shield team.

Great news about the cellist. I love that actress. :bolian:

Ambivalent about the Spoilers. It's all in how they handle it. They've got a good track record, so I'm optimistic.

Until you see Captain American you can't realise how much of a change this has to make, without some huge curve ball the narrative of the series has to change hugely, not just the series but the entire MCU.

Something I didn't realize while watching the movie is that it takes place two years after Avengers, which I think gives the show a little wiggle room. But it'll be interesting to see how it all works out. Maybe even Coulson will be the head of new SHIELD haha.

Need to check the first episode, but was it stated there or somewhere else how long was it after Avengers? Coulson was dead for months, so year might be right.

Didnt actually realize that time difference myself either. They did make cool sets and effects for MODOK.. Might not be too expensive to film couple of scenes over there for tv. So could they make kind of backwards storytelling? We know how everything ends in Avengers, but we follow how AoS team finds out who is Clairvoyant?
Spoiler inside a spoiler :D Maybe Victoria Hand is Clairvoyant, as has been rumoured, and is using MODOK to see the future? That way there is still a surprise of Victoria Hand for the series, even if tool (MODOK) is known.

I'm sure they did mention the timeframe at the beginning but I can't remember exactly. But we do know it's happening around the same time as Thor 2. HOpefully someone will make a timeline soon enough!

In hindsight, there was an interesting bit of CA:TWS foreshadowing on AoS.

Po: "SHIELD? The Clairvoyant sees an end to all that."

Her full birth name is Melinda Mayble Schwartz.

My wife used to work at a Japanese company, where all the employees chose an official American first name for the convenience of the non-Asian employees. I don't know if they changed them legally, but it's what they were called around the office. They called my wife "Mary-san" :)
