Academy Awards discussion thread

Masturbatory show overall, which they have been for years. They are always honoring something in the past. I think future Oscars will honor the honoring events of past ceremonies.

What was with the panning around during the memorium montage? And isn't it chicken shit they applaud during it. "Oh, yeah, we loved Sydney Pollack and Paul Newman more than Chuck Heston!!"

Some terrible dresses on Jessica Biel and Reese Witherspoon.

This might be a good movie. But it looks like a one view, "that was interesting" never watch again or think about again type. Which was my reaction when I saw "Crash".

That formula equals Oscar gold.

Absolutely correct! THe only movies I get excited for that are nominated are those I have heard of before that. Otherwise "Oscar hype" is just a marketing angle for films I could careless about. Of course some stuff surprises me.

I probably will see Slumdog Millionaire. OF the Best Picture noms I have only seen Benjamen Button and Frost/Nixon.

They way it was so badly filmed it hard to tell who got more applause. I could hear a lot of clapping for Heston.

In terms of Box office appeal there is no doubt that Heston was the bigger star. His later political activities have shaded Hollywood's perceptions of his fame. But I doubt its affected the most Americans views of him as an actor.

Slumdog millionaire.

Have you seen it? What's the sigh for?

I've no real problem with it as a movie, and I wish the best to the creative team involved. I'm more disappointed that Thomas Newman lost best song & best soundtrack for Wall*E. It seems everytime that man gets close, he never gets the brass ring. You know, always a bridesmaid never a bride? Like that.

I have not seen Slumdog Millionaire, but I have the sneaking suspicion I will like it. I was just really, really rooting for Ben Burtt and Thomas Newman. I'll catch it on DVD. If I like it I'll say so. If I don't, I'll say so. I've never had a problem being wrong when it's deserved.

Slumdog millionaire.

Ok, you've been pouting over Slumdog Millionaire for this entire thread. What problems, pray tell, do you have with it?

My problem is that I wanted Wall*E to win.
I figured that was obvious from my references to Wall*E and it's not winning.

Were "The Legion of Iconic Actors" whipped out that they had bring in Brody as a last resort?

Much of the reviews and news about The Wrestler focused on the comparisons to Mickey's own life. He said so as well.

That is what cost him the Oscar. The sense that as impressive as he was on screen he was just being himself. As result the false perception that he was not really acting. While Sean Penn was far from his own personality as Harvey Milk.

That is why he was convinced to back out of Wrestlemaina. It just added to the perception that this was really not acting role but an extension of his real life. Even just considering appearing was a mistake.

Heath just won for his role in The Dark Knight-amazing! His family gave a very gracious acceptance speech about their famous member. High-fives all around!!!!!;):techman::)

I agree on the sound; I have no idea why Slumdog won over Wall-E. I mean, Ben Burtt and his team effectively gave the characters life through their vocalisations. Audibly Slumdog was a treat, but not like what they did with Wall-E.

Honestly, I think the reason Rahman won over Newman is because, well... Newman's song was kind of bland. Something you hear on a Lite FM station. Rahman's songs, on the other hand, were an integral part of the canvas that was Slumdog Millionaire. They greatly enhanced the atmosphere and mood throughout the film, which is exactly what such songs should do. There's a reason its soundtrack has been on the top 10 of the Soundtrack charts of iTunes for months now.

Begin rant.

This year's Academy Awards were even more of a self-congratulatory circle jerk than previous ones I've seen. Why are these great actors and actresses always so stilted in their introductions? And unlike last year, the competition is a lot weaker crop of films.

Mickey Rourke and Melissa Leo were robbed. Kate Winslet for the travesty that is The Reader? Hooray for Harvey Weinstein. I'm not unhappy that Sean Penn won--his performance was good--but I thought Rourke's was better.

Slumdog Millionaire won in the categories it deserved (music, cinematography). It also took away undeserved Best Picture and Best Director wins, too. I can't see myself honestly awarding Danny Boyle for anything. The man makes 28 Days Later and can't admit it's a zombie film. The man makes Slumdog Millionaire and won't admit it's influenced by Bollywood. I've already aired my grievences towards the film elsewhere ( it's entertaining fluff that's been elevated due to locales unfamiliar to American audiences, it aestheticizes poverty, it's not as good as scores of actual Indian films...). Would have preferred a Milk win (or The Wrestler, but it would have to have been nominated.

At least Penelope Cruz won for Vicky Christina Barcelona. That's a performance that sticks with you many months after the fact.

End rant.

I can understand that. Slumdog winning best picture? I'll figure that out when I watch it, but best soundtrack? I actually went and bought the Wall*E soundtrack because it moved me to tears (good ones). There's just so much power and emotion in that music, without words, and it effectively reached me, making Wall*E my favorite movie of the year and into my top 5 favorite movies of all time.

I just felt Ben Burtt & Thomas Newman were a bit shafted.

I think you'll enjoy it once you see it. It's a very expansive, interesting tale with a very upbeat, feel-good and highly energetic ending. :)

I certainly don't mean to diss Wall-E in anyway, though. I loved Wall-E. When they showed the romance montage, I was trying to think of which romance touched me more between Slumdog and Wall-E, and I have to say, Wall-E and Eve's story wins out. I never thought I could root for a couple of robots as much as I did for them. When Wall-E was rebooted to "default" settings... I'm glad the theater was dark. ;)
