Academy Awards discussion thread

There are no true giants in Hollywood these days. There are great actors, but not many who will stand the test of time.

That's probably true of the old ones as well. Do young people (God that makes me sound old) really know Clark Gable, Elizabeth Taylor and Bette Davis? And the new ones, I'm not sure if we will know without the test of time.

I do. I'm 23. I watch a ton of old films, and most are WAY better then today's.

Plenty do. I grew up watching classic films- and I knew who Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Orson Welles, Clark Gable, Vivian Leigh and others were long before I knew who the big stars of my generation were. My seventeen-year-old nephew likes to watch classics with his parents on Turner Classic Movies. He loved Manchurian Candidate and various Hitchcock films, among others.

Heath just won for his role in The Dark Knight-amazing! His family gave a very gracious acceptance speech about their famous member. High-fives all around!!!!!;):techman::)

Nice to see The Dark Knight get some more love but that Oscar was practically stolen from Ben Burtt.

Same here.

Nice to see Dark Knight take another award. Though I wouldn't have minded Ben Burtt taking another one home for Wall-E.

yeah, and dark knight wasnt really an effects heavy movie. Come to think of it i cant think of any big special effects movie from 08 other than Ironman, Indy 4, Hancock and Hellboy 2

No way. The CG character was decent at best. And I could see the VFX shots miles away.

Button had EXCELLENT CG creation and compositing. Especially the compositing.

I was thoroughly unimpressed by the CG for Benjamin Button.

Slumdog Millionaire
over Wall*E?
Oy.

Hmm, I never knew they were so big with the younger generation, so are they all watching them on Turner Classic or renting (downloading?) them?:)

Actually there were a ton of VFX shots in Dark Knight.

When the Bat Cycle comes out of the Batmobile.......it's entirely CG.

Plus they were working on 8k plates for imax, instead of the standard 2k.
