Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

Well, at least it has a btter shot than the Flash Gordon TV series. They wasted the 1st half with lame earth Based stories (presumably to save money), and goofy versions of classic Gordon characters, like the hawkmen, who were regular guys with "flying capes" & running around squawking.

The 2nd 1/2 got to a more modernized Flash Gordon feel.

AoS should be able to "feel" better next season.

Actually it was more like the first 1/3 and the second 2/3 of the season. Of the first seven episodes (counting the pilot as 2 parts as it is on the DVDs), five were split between Earth and Mongo (usually weighted toward Earth) and two were almost entirely Earthbound. After that, though, only one and a half of the remaining 15 episodes were Earth-centric.

Basically, if you can make it through the first DVD in the box set, the remaining three are much more solid.

Season 1 was difficult, because they wanted to react to all the hell that broke lose in TWS, but the first half + of the season was just set up to get to that point.
I hope season 2 will allow them to find their own rythm. I have faith, but then again I had faith in the Stargate producers too...

I do hope they stick to their movie/television crossover formula. Guardians of the Galaxy was covered (I think) with the blue alien. I believe the next season will start after AoU, Ant-Man, and Doctor Strange but I bet they'll back story them like Iron Man 3's extremis.

So, in light of what we learned about Garrett's condition last episode, does anyone else think that his choice in music was informed by the fact that he himself is facing the reaper?

That song now has at least three contextual meanings for SHIELD purposes: Coulson's been dragged away from the reaper by Fury's choices. SHIELD as an organization may well have fallen to the reaper.

And then, as you suggest, there's John Garrett.

I'll be somewhat disappointed if it's not included in the Season One soundtrack.

And apparently, the AoS finale will have consequences across the larger MCU...

AoS should probably cross over with Every new Marvel movie that Marvel still owns.

This probably means that each subsequent season, or at least a cluster of episodes surrounding each movies release will be coloured and flavoured by the movie that is being released.

Shield's next season will start this fall. Well before any of those movies premiere. In fact, season 2 will be mostly/completely over before they premiere.

Turtletrekker, good to see the possibility of things reverberating back to the movies. So far, the only Lorelei seemed to hint at that possibility.

Next season will start after Guardians of the Galaxy and will end before Age of Ultron. Ant-Man won't be until the summer after that (unless I missed something and you're talking about season 3?). GOTG is part of the reason I think season 2 will have a big Kree connection (that and Skye's monster parents).

MTV's review is even better (it occurs to me that given Marvel's notorious secrecy, that they must be extremely confident in this episode to be releasing in advance to reviewers).

On Nick Fury...

Spoiler: This might be considered a very mild spoiler by some.

ABC has been pretty prominently teasing that Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury will show up in the episode. Given he previously appeared in a short (but funny) tag in the second episode of the season, we expected he’d provide a similarly brief appearance here. Not so. We won’t spoil how or why Fury gets involved (did we mention we’re keeping this spoiler free?), but suffice to say it’s a major role in the episode, and an extremely pleasant surprise.

On Coulson's resurrection...

One of the major threads running throughout this season has been the resurrection of Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). We know now how he came back (machines, alien blood), but not why. Why was it so important to bring Coulson back from the dead, when S.H.I.E.L.D. agents die every day? This hour we get an answer to that, why Coulson is important. And it’s a surprisingly emotional coda that not only ties up season one, but acts as an afterword to the events of “The Avengers.”

MCU connections...

This one we’re going to dodge around even more extensively than the others, but we can say that the episode does not tee up the next Marvel Studios movie, “Guardians of the Galaxy” — unless there’s an explicit connection we missed. It does, however, tie into a number of other movies quite nicely, which is neat.

And there is other very cool stuff in the article. Nothing any more spoilery than the Fury "spoiler" above.

And here I just thought it was a pun on him being chased by a pair of reaper drones. Yes, I know they weren't *actual* reaper drones, but still...

Guardians comes out in mid-August, which is usually about the time shows come out of their Summer Hiatus.

I hope season 2 will have a running sub plot about how Ultron is created so when Avengers 2 comes out it acts as exposition/prequel to it, but of course the movie itself wouldn't require to see the show.

I remember they had a bunch of comics that were supposed to explain most of the weird unanswered questions about Star Trek 09. Something like that, except the movie will be self contained but people that were paying attention to the show would say to themselves, "oh, that's where that was going" but wouldn't need it to watch the movie.

I think they might be willing to do that kind of thing because twice the berserker staff was shown and both times someone didn't do the whole, "Is that the berserker staff?" "You mean the one that makes the person holding it enraged and dangerous like a berserker?" drivel. It was just there. If you were paying attention, you know what it is and what it does. If you weren't, well, you'll find out soon enough.
I like knowing lots of things about imaginary stuff, and judging by this forum, I'm not the only one, and this show seems to want to reward that type of interest. I'm hoping that continues. I really like internal consistency and continuity. Yes, I admitted that.

And if Captain Mar-Vell is standing there saying hi, I'll be jumping around the house for about an hour.
