Which in theory, they could do almost instantly, otherwise they are ineffective and who cares.

Which made no sense when you think about it. Once HYDRA/SHIELD revealed themselves their plan would ultimately fail.

I tried to read that story. Guess I wasn't high enough.

    Hydra wouldn't have revealed themselves.

They would have ruled as S.H.I.E.L.D. and the US Government.

Even if the attack by the hellicarriers was blamed on Hydra, S.H.I.E.L.D. would then claim that they had destroyed all Hydra insurgents and taken a victory lap.

    And to quote Cap:

But still, I can't help thinking the term "terrorist" is synonymous with Al Qaeda, et al. Does Al Qaeda seek world domination? No, they only use terror to make a political statement or advance their extremist agenda.

No, it wouldn't, because by that point they'd already have control of the firepower and surveillance technology to enable them to swiftly eliminate anyone who stood against them. That was the point of the movie: that they'd already all but succeeded in their conquest, because they'd accumulated power insidiously under the guise of protection. Bringing Insight online and exterminating the opposition was the last step in their conquest, not the first.

Paradoxical that the last step in the process should be the most risky, then. But we wouldn't have the story without that, right?

Hard to fail once Insight is in the air, to be fair. Their plan succeeded once they got the funding for the project (provided it launched successfully). Once in the air, their pretenses are irrelevant.

I wonder if HYDRA in the MCU in the 2010s is a highly cohesive organization or if people like Garrett could possibly break off and form their own organization(s).

How was it the most risky? They already had control of the organization and the carriers, and they already had the surveillance information and calculations assigning their targets. The weapon was already loaded and aimed -- what Cap and his team did was simply to stop them from pulling the trigger. (Or rather, to redirect the aim.)

In the comics Hydra's subgroups were always breaking off.

They sure like to name-drop Romanoff a lot.

I predict that the lie detector will be about as useful as Counselor Troi.

Okay. After this first skirmish? I will be surprised if the word "ExTechOp" is never spoken during the run of the series. Surprised and more than a little disappointed.

Cool that Trip seems to be Gabe Jones's grandson (assuming the most obvious choice).

They should have said that they're the FBI...CIA is for foreign work.

Maybe if they had someone besides Simmons come up with the lie, they would have.

I'm going to start rooting against them using comic characters. They all seem to die ;)

Those scenes combined with the Cello worked well, though. Had a nice tone to it.

They must have discussed it beforehand, so Trip would have been in on it.

Yep. FBI would've been better. But... *shrugs*
