Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

Guess they're teasing us along...unless somebody else got more out of that.

I guess we'll consider that "part 1" of the reveal.

We learned that he was dead for days, but we don't know how he's alive right now. That machine was part of the 7th operation, but we don't know if it had anything to do with bringing him back to life, or if it was simply responsible for altering his memories.

I got the impression it was a different machine (or machines). Although, since one of the biggest problems would be neurological damage, I'd imagine that machine was part of the process earlier.

I think that's all it is. Essentially secret SHIELD technology that's an abomination to man and God. It was so horrifying that Coulson, who was conscious throughout, begged for them to kill him. It included an operation that changed his memories.

I think that's all we're going to get. If they made up a name for it, it isn't going to change what it is. The point is to explore what happened more than identify what happened, it seems.

You might be right, but I have a feeling there's more to come.

He certainly was not conscious throughout the entire thing though. He was dead for days.

Looks like Skye is about to get more answers than she bargained for next week too.

Poor Mike, the last thing you want to see when you wake up is people typing in front of your eye on this show.

That was one of the more disturbing scenes I've seen, on regular or cable TV.

I like Coulson but I'm kind of baffled as to why Fury thought he was such a special snowflake as to "move heaven and Earth" to resurrect him. I like Coulson but what's so special about him. He's had the most experience working with The Avengers but ultimately he was more important in death as a means to rally them.''

Of course Shield has to look bad in order to prop up the main characters. Shield's computer teams should have been on those financial transactions a lot sooner than Skye.

I thought this was a very effective episode. A lot of big things happening, a lot of very effective scenes, good showings for most of the characters (in particular we got to see just what a badass Skye can be when she's cut loose), and some real answers coming out. If the show can maintain this level, I think opinions of it will improve.

I like it that the "secret" SHIELD was keeping was merely Coulson's suffering during the resurrection. It wasn't something dark and sinister, it was an attempt at an act of kindness. Okay, maybe there's more to find out about how and why he was resurrected, but for the moment I'm satisfied. At least we can finally put the damn Life Model Decoy theory to rest.

I had a thought: Please, please let the Clairvoyant be Stan Lee!

Although I noted that Po and Raina both carefully avoided using gender-specific pronouns in discussing the Clairvoyant. It might be a woman. (Maybe Victoria Hand?)

The actual secret was that Coulson lost the will to live, so the shocking reveal is that Coulson is a member of the Naboo royal family.

I would think that SHIELD's forensic accounting people ought to be able to run rings around the auditors of every member nation's tax law authorities.

SHIELD hasn't shown itself all that adept at more subtle forms of investigation from what we've seen - or subtlety in general (they tried to nuke New York after all).

Does the fact that Skye offered a sympathetic ear to Coulson mean that Coulson is now going to have sex with May?

Huh, didn't realize there was a new episode on tonight, well the DVR caught I'm sure. Guess I expected the winter hiatus to be a bit longer.

That was a creepy little scene wasn't it? I don't want to get there like Coulson but I'd love to be in Tahiti right now *brrrrr*.

When they zoomed in on the front of the plane, the fuselage looked like it had a diameter that's not large enough to accommodate what we see on the inside.

My jaw dropped when i saw the machine working on Coulson.. that was really gruesome and unexpected for Shield and Gregg played it perfectly (still the best actor on the show).

However if it merely turns out to be some very advanced medical technology i'm a little disappointed because i expected something bigger, maybe even supernatural (lord knows the Marvel universe is not short on this).

The rest of the episode is kinda meh.. Shield seems really inept when they can be outmaneuvered by a young woman without support and handicapped by not being able to use technology herself.

I'm sure they used Asgardian tech. Or maybe I'm reading too much into Coulson's space vision and what looked like Asgard for a moment.

Yeah, a poor follow-up to the mid-season cliff-hanger. A lot of shows do this.

For what it's worth, it really only takes the special brain surgery machine. If we could cure brain death, we have the technology now to do the rest (heart transplant, blood transfusion, etc.).

I'm not sure why or where it's from, but that scene with the machine gave me a distinct anime vibe. 'Ghost in the Shell' or 'Akira' perhaps? Oh no, I remember now, it's that bit from the Animatrix. Damn that was creepy. *shudders*

Anyone else notice what looked like the super-soldier serum cryo-canister from Incredible Hulk? Could this technology possibly tie into one of the many failed attempts to re-create Cap?
Personally I suspect...
this is almost exactly what was done to Bucky.
