Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

Loved the episode to bits. But how could the neo-nazi/pagan guys find the first part of the staff to begin with?
The Dollhouse referrence was way cool.

 

Because it's good, goofy fun and some of the actors are obviously having a ball. Rumple and Regina alone are worth the price of admission . . ..

I don't think they were Nazis of any sort, just pagans worshipping Norse gods.

They found the tree using the clues from the poem in the legend -- one of them quoted a line about the circle of stones that marked it. I'm not clear on how they knew what part of the tree it was in, but maybe they extrapolated from the age and growth rate of the tree, or something.

 

Someone did mention that they were a hate group.

 

Oh. Well, I guess that's not surprising, given that the Nazis co-opted Norse and Germanic mythology as part of their symbolism. Oooh, imagine their shock if they ever met Heimdall and Hogun...

 

If you have enough imagination, you don't need acid.

 

^I tried to get into it but it wasn't for me and my imagination's pretty good, though I could believe acid would make that show great.

 

It would be an entertaining spectacle...for us in the audience!

(Guessing that Norway teaches "English-as-second-language" classes in their school system...?)

 

The Norwegian forest ranger was a caricature of European social democracy, or maybe just Europeans. Or maybe of left-wing humanism. Or maybe of plain old humanism. I already knew this show had some really crappy writing to match its backwards ideas. But does this audience really find this kind of thing to be happy thoughts? What really is the charming fun to be found in mean-spirited twaddle?

 

You got all that from @ 1 minute of screen time?

 

In other words, you enjoyed that one minute. Good you got your money's worth. I still think it was a nasty, dumbass minute that decent writers would either never written, or later asked themselves, WTF was I thinking?

But, no, objectively it's not a really big deal, it's like a zit on the tip of the nose.

Well, I missed last week's episode and there isn't a rerun before tomorrow's, so... Maybe I'll try to catch up when they repeat the series.

 

Could you elaborate a bit more on what you mean?

I saw the character as just a service role, a character who serves a function (e.g., provide exposition, ask questions, react to events, etc.) and not an intentional commentary on anything much at all. I didn't view him as "charming" or "mean-spirited" but I may have missed something watching the episode the first time around.

Any clarification would be appreciated.

I thought he was acting a little odd when he was wondering why those two were so mean. At first I thought that maybe the staff had some sort of reverse effect, causing the girl to somehow take away his "stiff upper lip".

 

I thought that he was simply traumatized by what happened and by what he saw.

 

I didn't really put that much thought into the forest ranger character, and I doubt the writers did either. I had just assumed he was reacting to what he saw, with no real point beyond that.

I've never done drugs and OUAT is one of my favorite shows.

 

Am I being wrong-headed here, or does it seem like Coulson and Skye might end up pushed by their respective mysteries into a closer alliance than either would be currently comfortable with?
