The thread derail was @CoveTom's deciding this topic was an appropriate place to condemn what Wil Wheaton said elsewhere on social media.

Whether Wheaton ought to have made the post or not, CoveTom was wrong to bring it to this topic. Their having done so, it was reasonable for people to respond - and CoveTom has no reason to feel put-upon or censored by that.

Where did I say that I felt put-upon or censored? I don't believe I've said that anywhere in this thread.

Since @1001001 has requested that the discussion on this not continue and stay away from the political, I will respect that and will not address any of the specific points replies have made. However, I did just want to clarify that I've never said I felt put-upon or censored by anything in this thread.

Um, he played a Lead character on an American/U.S. TV series for 7 seasons (+3 if you count PICARD). Yes, it was aired all over the world, but make no mistake it was written with an American mindset FOR primarily an American audience often commenting on Amerin issues in it's episodes.

It was a large body of work in his acting career.

He WAS a great actor and good human being.

RIP Partick Stewart.

Um, he played a Lead character on an American/U.S. TV series for 7 seasons (+3 if you count PICARD). Yes, it was aired all over the world, but make no mistake it was written with an American mindset FOR primarily an American audience often commenting on Amerin issues in it's episodes.

It was a large body of work in his acting career.

Ive only ever watched a few early episodes. Haven't kept up. Will have to resume it. Glad Stewart stayed with it. The bits ive seen with him on youtube are hilarious.

I will say, what I've noticed the last few days since his passing, is family members and friends on my Facebook feed posting tributes to him.

People whom I would not expect to be TNG/X-Men fans, but who are saying Patrick's death touched something in them; which kind of goes to show what an impact he's had on people over the last 40+ years.

Right. He had two huge dedicated fanbases , then all the people who may have known him from just watching the X-Men films and MCU as general audience and not super fans. The great thing was he never flaunted his success.. Not much public controversy in his life. (The biggest probably being his James Corden fight onstage back in about 2010.. which hilariously was mended)

Peoole forget just how popular star trek was in the 80s and 90s. Encounter at Farpoint got 27 million viewer. Even back in those days it was a fantastic number. To me those years were the golden era of star trek. We'll never see that again I suspect.

I remember when "All Good Things..." aired. It was an *event*. Made national newscasts. Drew enormous attention. It was the height of Trek in pop culture.

Yes. It was a very big event. Than Generations came out a few months later. Just a great time to be a star trek fans. The series were all good. The movies maybe weren't spectacular except maybe the first two but they all entertained. All the series were linked and we even saw the defiant, the doctor and janeway make cameos in the movies.Kirk, Chekov and Scotty got more than cameos in the first tng movie. They quit the tng movies too quickly in my opinion. But it was so much fun those years. I wish it were that way today.

I recall Patrick mentioning how Bob Justman (or someone else on the early TNG crew) told him that more people will watch him perform at the TNG series premiere than all the people who had watched him up to that point (in either theater or his previous film/tv work like Dune, I, Claudius etc.). I think that's about when he understood just how big a show he had signed onto.
