RIP Patrick Stewart

This is absolutely despicable behavior from Wil Wheaton and has removed what last shred of respect I had for the man.

Miller is a Nazi piece of white supremacist shit.
Wheaton is right.
No decent person wants a tribute from scum like that.
So we are only allowed to enjoy the work of an actor if we agree with their politics?
You can enjoy it, no one can't stop you.

But if ones a bigoted warmongering Nazi piece of shit they need to accept that actor, their freinds, their family and other fans will despise you.

Guys, please stop this - we are supposed to be honouring a great man.

I’d like to gently suggest we step back for a moment. This thread is here to honour Sir Patrick, and I don’t think pulling it into an argument about Wil Wheaton is what he would have wanted.

Patrick Stewart gave us Jean-Luc Picard, a man who led with intellect and compassion and who believed that people could do better. A lot of us grew up on that. Many of the best Next Generation stories were about Picard teaching, mentoring and forgiving, and Wesley Crusher was part of that. Whatever any of us feel about the character or the man who played him, he shared a set with Sir Patrick for years, and he is probably grieving too.

We’re all mourning the same loss. Some of us have been fans for thirty-odd years, and some lost a bit of their childhood this week. Grief makes people sharp, but we’re better than that here.

To be very clear, what Wil Wheaton wrote was

 FUCKAWESOME
I never knew that man but I feel a certain protectiveness over Sir Patrick as a fellow Brit.

I honestly don't think he would have ever acted like that as he was a dignified man. Wil's crass behaviour is making it about him and I don't feel reflects Patrick. Nor does it honour his memory.

Sir Patrick hasn't even had a funeral yet. I think the American warfare can wait a few days until he's put to rest.

Suffice it to say he had a positive influence on many folks of every stripe….

I wish he could have continued to do so—I would gladly have given up my remaining days here to give to him.

Marina has been hit particularly hard.

Some people think Wil was out of order, and others think it was fair. I doubt we’ll settle that here, and I don’t think a memorial thread is the place to try. But it’s worth remembering where it came from. Wil spent his teenage years working alongside Sir Patrick, and he has just lost a colleague, mentor, father figure and a Captain. People say things in grief that they might put differently a week later. His own tribute was just two words: “Godspeed, Captain.”

Sir Patrick gave us a man who led by listening and who held his ground without contempt for the people around him. I can’t think of a better way to honour that than to disagree with each other decently, or to leave the disagreement for another thread where the rules allow it.

The thread derail was @CoveTom's deciding this topic was an appropriate place to condemn what Wil Wheaton said elsewhere on social media.

Whether Wheaton ought to have made the post or not, CoveTom was wrong to bring it to this topic. Their having done so, it was reasonable for people to respond - and CoveTom has no reason to feel put-upon or censored by that.

I was watching a streaming church service on my computer yesterday, and when the time came for prayer requests, a woman in the congregation informed the pastor that Patrick Stewart had died. The pastor didn't seem to know who he was, but the woman went on to explain that he was Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek. The pastor then said he would pray for Patrick's family. The whole exchange was pretty odd, I think.

Indeed. I don't understand why it was brought up at all. Miller has every right to pay tribute to Stewart, and Wheaton has every right to give his opinion on it. Both exercised their rights.

Personally, I strongly agree with Wil, but bringing it into this tribute thread was clearly inappropriate.

OTOH, Wil did know the man and was close to him. A closeness that transcends simply sharing a national origin with him. So Wil has every right to take umbrage at someone who tries to hitch their wagon to Sir Patrick's star. Especially someone who is the antithesis to what Stewart stood and fought for. This goes far beyond "Americaning."

Okay, so...

@Hal Jordan is completely correct.

It was @CoveTom who decided to dump this nonsense into this tribute thread in the first place. Once he did that, people were absolutely free to respond. Well done.

I also agree with @AntonyF that it would be greatly preferable if we could keep this a respectful thread to remember Patrick Stewart.

Let's try to get back on track, please, and leave the political stuff out of it.

My condolences. I'm watching as several friends fade away, and said goodbye to one of 23 years last Sunday, who went into home hospice and I'll never see again. It's crushing.
Alzheimer's took my final uncle two years back, though due to assorted factors I only found out about it the very day it took Stewart. My condolences to you, Maurice.
