RIP Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart, the star of Star Trek: The Next Generation, died yesterday at his home in Los Angeles following a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. He was 86.

I did notice how frail he seemed in Dr. Strange but I didn't know his health had deteriorated so badly. He defined Trek for an entire era and also brought that gravitas to X-Men, not to mention his countless theater roles. The acting world just won't be the same without him.

At ten years of age, I had an interest in Roman history.

I first saw Patrick as Sejanus on PBS 50 years ago...in I, CLAUDIUS. The year was 1976.

Caligula met his end poorly.....but when the guards came for Sejanus--he met his end with dignity...and a smile.

That scene stuck with me....my first impression of a man later to command a Starship on television, was that of an individual accepting his fate.

That was aired on November 1st, 1976....nearly a full half century ago.

Kirk, Spock and McCoy were the three faces of Man.

Picard was the whole package...truly the man of all seasons.
