RIP Sir Patrick Stewart

Funny the things he showed up in before Trek. Dune, Excalibur and Lifeforce. All very different parts. Not even sure I sussed they were played by the same guy or that guy was playing Picard in that new Trek show I was watching. I saw him in I, Claudius as well.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is another one where he manages to look like a totally different person.

The beauty of that is he's only in one scene (a flashback no less) and doesn't say a word, but despite that his presence bestrides the whole story. He is a constant menace, like the shark from 'Jaws'. I might have a re-watch of that very soon. He also played Lenin.

Out of the blue. Thought he'd live forever. A true legend.

My thoughts exactly. Something about him was so timeless, and ageless as well. That may contribute to that, but also the fact that he was always so vital and had an incomparable presence on screen.

I continued my long-languishing rewatch of TNG in his honor upon hearing the news on Thursday. There's a melancholy aspect to that now. Maybe also because it drives home the passage of time from a certain generational (i.e. Gen X, Millennial) perspective. TOS was already in the past when I discovered Star Trek, while TNG was current. To see the first TNG cast member die is something that must have never crossed my mind because they were 'the new guys'.

I haven't figured out which episodes of TNG I want to rewatch.

At this moment, I'm listening to the Narinia audiobook Stewart narrated. The Last Battle. It's not my favorite Narnia book but I do enjoy Stewart's narration.

My most embarrassing moment with a Trek actor was because of Stewart. I was at a con once. My fibro was bad, and I was tired, and just sitting in a chair outside the hotel out back people-watching in-between shows. Stewart came into view. He was wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans, and must have been in-between events too, I guess. I stared a bit too long, partly due to fatigue and partly due to the idle thought that "damn, he looks good for being in his 80s." I meant nothing by it.

But he looked my way and caught me looking. I bet I turned crimson. I smiled, shrugged my shoulders in apology, and hastily looked away. Oops.

The man was in superb shape though. I had to give him credit. He took very good care of himself. He didn't look like he was as old as he was.

I never got to meet Patrick Stewart and I envy the fans who were lucky enough to have had that honor.

I took a few minutes to envision and visualize that I did meet him. At a sci-fi cosplay convention. In Philadelphia. I visualized myself shaking hands with him and me telling him how much I love his portrayal as Picard. He tells me playing Picard has had the same effect on him too. He happily signs me an autograph without me requesting one and I happily walk away to let other fans interact with him.

Again, this sadly never actually happened but it somewhat softens the blow of him passing before I got to meet him.

I recently also read a story somebody posted on Reddit about how he (the Redditor) unknowingly parked right next to Stewart at a FedEx in Los Angeles. Patrick was there to send a package and the guy said hello to him as he was walking to his car. The guy walked in the complete opposite direction pretending he was going somewhere else because he didn't want to seem like he was stalking him. This wasn't that long ago too from what I remember.

I saw him twice on Broadway when he did his one man show version of A Christmas Carol. It was incredible. Every line, every part, no pauses, just an empty stage and a chair to sit on. It was really something. Once we were in the back but once we were in the 5th or 6th row... very close.

strange that he never even mentioned Excalibur in his autobiography, when discussing his early film projects
